cranks
« on: July 01, 2012, 03:59 PM »
right lads .. when we build our bikes we GENERALY put 1 piece cranks on a freestyler and 3 piece cranks on a race bike. however as is mentioned so many times MOST of us BITD ran 1 piece as its what was affordably. so the question is .... is ok to put a 1 piece on a race bike that were building today  :-\ ?

Damn right it is great to see a one piece on a race bike.

1000 times better than throwing a set of twin pinch Redlines on it and cheaper too.  :daumenhoch:

I've always prefered the look of OPC on freestyle & race, especially on Old School Rides.

I always wanted some flights, but single pinch would have severely broken the bank
Suppose I'm not that fussy as I built it to ride, but I still like the look of the twin pinchers on my haro (and I'm not worried that losing one bolt means they'll fall into the gutter while pedaling down oxford street)

I'll get my coat  ;D

bitd 3 piece where the things of dreams

So if you can afford it now then that's the way to go. Personally I don't like the look of opc so all of my bikes have 3 piece. Personnel preference I suppose.

We all started on one piece but we all wanted 3pc.I couldn't afford them but I saved up my paper route money, lunch money, raked & mowed lawns,etc.. to get my 1st set of dura ace on lay away plan back in the 70's.Did the same w/my suntour vx's,then later moved on to 401's & Profiles.I was poor but it depended on how bad you wanted them.I wanted them bad so worked for it.To me 3pc cranks will always be & look way better than 1pc.Apart from early builds other builds look slightly skimped on to me when i see them w/1pc cranks. This is not a put down on 1pc, just my honest opinion.  Cheers,Mike :daumenhoch:

Yup era correct as always for me, opc's have that great vintage look to them but Campy records are one of the nicest looking cranks IMO.

The vast majority of non-mini racebikes had OPC, so for authenticity, it's a YES.

I don't know anyone that went back to using 1pc after moving to 3pc.So unless it's an early build or built to spec copying your old bike, fave rider tribute or a near to or full on factory complete, why would you put 1pc on a build when you know you'd prefer 3? That's just the way i look at it.

As said before at the end of the day it's your ride so it's whatever suits you bud! :daumenhoch:

I had fights BITD but not until I was working & saving & had to clear a ladies loft of dirty old lagging in the heat of summer to get the last £25 I needed for them, then went to Waldens & brought them that same day  8)

But before this I had 1pc cranks on all my builds, now all my builds have 3pc cranks
