S&M Dirtbike build - NEW PICS
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:54 PM »
I've decided to do a build thread on my dirtbike, I'm building it on a budget to ride and thrash, rather than as an era correct resto, but I'm trying to use the sort of parts that I was buying when I got back in to BMX a good few years ago now.  So far I've got

Next gen dirtbike frame in black (off midschooljon) few scrapes and dings, but a t-cut has brought up that S&M thick paint job
S&M bars (not sure of exact model) bit tatty but cool, and odyssey jump seat donated by a mate
Primo seat clamp that I found in my spares box
a late 90s top load plain stem
Black chrome Supra Js on prolite stealth hubs, 36s with black spokes (bmxcity £45!!!)

ordered today - inertia street forks in grey, coalition 33t black sprocket and a grey AD990

I found a Syncros headset (cups) in the shed but not sure what bearings to get for it, and just need to get the rest. Got a strict budget so shopping around, and if anyone cares I'll put some pics up soon

Big question is - do I get the retro pad set? :-\

I just emailed him and asked if he would post them and he said he would for about £8, so I won them and then reminded him...

I'll go one better. I put (I think) £15 on them, saw the 'no postage' thing too late, then asked if I could retract the bid. He did, but never offered to post them.

people on ebay can be a bit random, I asked him if he would post, about three days before the end of the listing.  but he didn't add postage to the listing, which was ok with me becasue it narrows the field of potential buyers

got an email last night with a part postage refund as it didn't come to £8, the guy's a legend in my eyes!!!

itching to see what it's going to look like so I stuck my new Premium tyres on the wheels and stuck a few bits together to get an idea.  the black chrome rims look special!!

Got everything now except for 13t freewheel, pedals, seatpost, brake cable, chain and grips

If anyone can identify the bars let me know, they aren't mega tall but they are 27 inches wide or thereabouts

Got a bit of a black/grey/raw colour scheme going on so not likely to start painting a new set of forks! They are actually a bit darker than they look in the pic.

The prolite stealth cranks were quite chipped and tatty, so they went into a bag of oven pride for 10 minutes and are now dull raw ali, and look a lot tidier

haven't done any bulding yet cos of the fookin endless rain!! >:(

I've decided not to use the prolite stealth cranks and going for some tubular instead, so will be looking to move on the prolites if anyone is interested.  i got new 20mm mid size bearings for them so they will fit a mid bb or go into USA cups

sorted a freewheel,

Egg supplied me with a spanking but cut down Primo Rod post and chucked in a chain, all for nowt, not even postage - top fella :4_17_5:

So i've decided not to use the prolite stealth cranks and new bearings and have moved them on, and bought some used chrome profiles instead  ;D

I've just ordered a 19mm sealed US bb from liferbmx, so if anyone wants a 22mm sealed US bb once I've removed it from the frame let me know, you can have it for nowt, or I'll swap for a set of grips and a slic cable!!
rest of the build is coming along, headset, stem and bars all fitted with forks, seat post and seat and wheels on

hopefully I'll get it finished next week as I want to try out the skatepark at Gravesend Cyclopark, but bedroom decorating for some reason seems to have a higher priority ...sigh...

Picked up my profiles today from city link depot, as they can't actually deliver stuff ::)

They have the large blocky/curved profile logo so I think that dates them as actual mid school profiles, I'll whack an image up later

Props to the seller, volt bmx in London, I got a 4down brochure, a bunch of stickers and the latest issue of the albion too

Best way of telling if they're proper mids, is the stamping on the back of the arms - if it's 'USA' followed by the full arm length in mm (ie 170/175/180/182/185 etc) then there mids - if it's just a two figure number (ie 70/80/85 etc) followed by the arm side (ie R or L) then they're new schoolers :)

The profiles just say USA 175 so are mids then, cheers
Glen, I thought that they didn't look fantastic but would be usable, when I unboxed them I was surprised that they are in really good condition with a few scratches and some pitting and light flaking on the inside of the arms.  Makes a change for something to turn up and be better than you expected

Ere are Dordy - there's a small difference with the Profile stamping at the front n'all:

Just removed other bb and fitted nice new one, then fitted the profiles and my coalition chainring.  cranks have had a spit and polish too.  want to get the flush bolts, and need to get a new chain ring bolt because the one on them is almost rounded so won't tighten enough.  nearly there, can't wait to get it finished :P

cheers for all the nice comments
