I have 2 builds on the go at the moment, the parts for which i have gradually selected after looking at more bikes then is probably healthy for a man of my age.

I like the idea of trying something new and it helps keep a fresh interest with every build.

My question is: Do you start a build with some parts already having picked themselves, compe 3 tyres for example, without you giving them much thought?

I generally start with a Frame set in mind or something that has caught my eye. I then picture it in mind and start collecting bucket loads of all sorts and end up using a few select parts and buying others

Always end up with lots of leftovers but never want to part with them, hence 2 big boxes full in the cupboard

My 1st build was cos I bought a Hoffman sugar baby in survivor condition, then realised it is the same 4130 frame as the Big Daddy, found I could get DELCals for it so decided to repowder it and went from there.

My new build? well, being on the heavy side (Me, being on the heavy side, I mean lol), 6 foot tall and the fact the Hoffman is a flatland frame AND is on the heavy side as well along with it being way too short to ever ride seriously (toptube length 18") and the fact I wasnt happy with the braking-I could go on.....and on..........

I saw something I liked the look of on the web with a longer frame, Aheadset, Ubrakes, new school parts (i.e they are built more solidly), lighter etc

I decided that old school AND mid school just didnt cut it for me anymore. Collecting these is fine if you want something that doesnt BRAKE well, will BREAK easily, looks good sitting on a carpet not being ridden and gathers money doing it. Collecting being the operative word.

I thought lets throw a bucket of cash at a new project and try and get some of the best components available. And get a professional bike builder to build it as opposed to me hitting BB cups in with a hammer lol

I didnt like any of the "new school" bikes whatsoever but when I saw THIS http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=418860 I fell in love with it and decided to copy it part for part and in the same colourway. The seat and grips are different brands and are white but thats pretty much the only difference. And I still get to ride a Hoffman too. The geometry and setup looks pretty dialled so no issues with braking or even a little flatland if I so choose. It also means I get to bring it back to the middle east with me and try and lose those few pounds in a way I enjoy (not much to do being stuck here in this compound).

Cant wait to get my 20th Anni Hoffman Condor.....................so i can ride it!! THATS the philosophy

I start with what ever frame happens to come my way - then it sits there waiting for the right part to turn up, or swap for what is needed to get it built

i write down on paper what parts are needed and see if i can work to that list - 5 bike on the list and a couple of boxes of parts - bits get resto'd up when i can and put to the side

I sit there and think about the builds built up in my mind and what they could look like with certain parts - this changes each week, till a bike is built and i can't change over parts

To be honest my when I get round to building a bike, it has been thought out in lots of detail for a long time.

I am building a bike now that I have been waiting for over 5 years, I had some of the parts as I knew the year I was looking for, so did a lot of research into the parts needed.

As for starting points, well I look at things (for example) like Comp III's, MX1000's, Kashimax Aero's and make sure that I go absoultely near those parts, there are/were much better tyres, brakes and seats bitd.

I started a Patterson pr200 build before i had the f+f

,bought a yellow kashi mx first,ironically its the part im not happy with

,need a blue one

Started a JMC build,looked though the parts i had,loads of black n silver parts,not used this colour scheme on other bikes,so went with that

colour scheme,thats my biggest problem,once thats sorted them rest is easier

No real philosophy but all my builds have to be era correct, for now Im trying to complete the vintage SE collection before starting all the others. Obviously I'm an SE fan so I'm aiming to build as many bikes as I can that have a link to the SE brand or a link to the OM

My builds are based on the main iconic bikes/brands everyone knew from BMXAction bike all between 1980 and 1984

My ambition was to have a full collection of these with the Race jerseys to match

I've now got them , just a couple of minor tweeks to 3 builds to complete

I've tried to make sure I have as varied a component list throughtout the builds , I don't like having exactly the same part on any build

Must be as era correct as possible

But I like restored , vnice survivor and NOS parts ,,, no real preference there

Only other preference is CHROME frame and forks $:-\$

(except the HLT ,E.T and Torker

)

Sorry Sean a few of my builds aren't painted and have the odd Kashi and MX brake here and there

,,, but doing bikes to replia spec or magazine feature spec ,, that's just how they were sold .

I do love seeing a rarer piece on peoples builds though ,,,any era whether it's Addicks parts ,Titron ,VG or Crupi etc

1. Build what I need as cheap as possible
2. Ride (badly)
3. Repair or swap the broken bits after step 2.

Mine are initially built up as cheap as possible so I can ride it, then parts slowly upgraded overtime till I'm happy.

Start with a frame, think yeah I'm gonna make a rat build I can throw about, end up spending hundreds and taking ages on it to make it an era correct bike with my favourite parts, and end up constantly upgrading and changing it. Although if i can find a dirt cheap late 80's haro frame(hint hint

) I'll definitely make a rat build next time round

I like different but not just for the sake of it, it's got to look right and era correct ish. I generally have a build in my minds eye for ages before I get all the bits so I don't usually have to change anything.
Rare and exotic is what I go for.

I´m a newschool racer and i´ve had maybe a 20 bikes. But i all threw them to the scrap when they were done. So me no collector here.

My philosophy is: Build them good, but midpriced. You´ll change 80% of the bike next season anyway.

BMX bikes are lovely, but in the end they are just tools to me.
