** restore or not restore? **
« on: May 11, 2012, 03:46 PM »
I’ve wanted to restore and build up an old school bike for years now. I have always been looking out on eBay for an 80’s bike to start my own project. So I was very excited when a friend of mine came across a Skyway TA 83 frame at a car boot sale. The bike was however quite badly damaged and seemed to have been in a fire at some point. Anyway he paid 40 quid for it but gave it me? So my question is to restore or not to restore? It has 2 places where the chrome as rusted through, and also some fire damage to the frame by the bottom bracket. It may need some welding and then re-powder coating in white? I email or post pictures when I've worked out how and hopefully someone will let me know if it’s worth doing? (I think so) Or even if someone can help or knows someone who can do the work?
Cheers :crazy2:

Welcome to RAD.

there's a number of people who can help with this.

a good starting point would be a couple of decent pictures of it, to assess it and then the advice will be free flowing :daumenhoch:

I've bought a fire damaged bike before, it was a right mess and a complete gamble but it paid off with a lot of hard work.

So yes, restore it.  :daumenhoch:
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

Definitely restore it.

I've seen Andy's restored bike and you'd never know what it had been through.

Good luck  :daumenhoch:

looks miles better than i expected..few more detailed/clear pictures of the damage you talk about would be good, but it doesnt look too far away from receiving white powder/new chrome and being mint again!

I'll get some pics up of the damage soon. The round washer fixing that holds the rear brakes on has come away from the frame? I'll post a pic as soon as I can? It may need some welding?

Cheers again.

Hmmm. Seat tube damage looks a bit tricky.

I think 'sawzall'  needs to be having a look at this.

No idea how busy he is though. :daumenhoch:

Thanks J.T

If "sawzall" could do it? I've got no experience in metal work at all? I've got no time scale on this project so if anyone can help?

Yeah I thought a fresh new white powdercoat?

Cheers guys?

some times a bit of rust, can be removed with the right stuff and hard work - but looking at yours it needs more work done in places, and if the chrome has flaked up or large spots have come off and leave bear metal underneath, then it's powder or a re-chrome

you don't have to do a white powder - it's just what we know as a skyway look

and with a fresh powder on it, it will give you a new mind of building it and what can be done to it  :daumenhoch:

where is your carboot scene ?
