Tech Question.............. New School Brake Squeal
« on: May 09, 2012, 06:51 PM »
Hi............ not my usual resto help but this is a Tech question for my 2010 WTP Zodiac.

Know I will get flamed for even riding a brake, but I like brakes! If I can stop at a point I choose, I see that as a good thing  :)

Only thing is that I cannot (and never have) used the damn thing as it sounds like you are torturing a piglet.

People have suggested roughing up the rim (dont really want to ruin the metalic blue) - swapping the blocks - bit to what etc..

Anyone got any ideas??

All (I think) clear blocks squeel  :crazy2:
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

listen to very loud music until there's a ringing in your ears. then you wont notice the brake squeal.  ;D i use dia compe green pads on the rear and grey one's on the front and they both squeal like a pig, i like it like that. you could try and toe them in to see if that stops it.

I recently had a very similar issue with my Salt+ Geo brake with clear pads, the squealing was deafening. Toeing the pads helped although the brake is not totally silent, I am living with it for the moment. I do have some Kool Stop pads in the garage as a back-up plan.

I use clear pads on my haro, they work great with skyways but squeal like fook
Comes in quite handy though on the London rides as you don't need a horn to shift people out of the way  ;D

don't forget to 'toe' the pads in either,(front of the pad hits the rim first)..... otherwise all pads will squeel a little

Not on powdered rims though, they get too hot and melt the powder, locking your brakes on.

i speak from experience!!

Great on my ally wall rims though.

Cheapo Clarks black blocks from Halfords are plenty good enough if your brake is set up properly and won't make that bastard noise. You can expect the brake to feel a little less sharp though, this goes for all pads that aren't clear - hence why clear pads came to be in the first place.

Jam you foot on the tire on the top stays and then spend the next 2-3 mins hobbling around becuase you bashed your toes in  :uglystupid2:

Exactly!! Well said! I have two broken toes already (not from trying to stop without brakes). The bike may look cooler without (to some), but I am all about the brakes!

Safety is no accident! Famous McDonalds quote! :)
