KZ 84 lazerlite and KYZ question
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:19 PM »
I have managed to pick up a 84 lazerlite, few of the original parts are missing, pedals, tires, seat and grips are incorrect as far as I know ( Dont know very much about Kuwahara, just going by info off the net). Not bad condition but would probably need a re chrome for a show pony. what was the difference between a KYZ frame and an ET  apart from the chrome ?

Nice laserlite :)

lots of different views on the KYZ & ET, but my understanding is:
The KYZ with a T2 serial number and no brake cable hole in the gusset were some left over gusset plates from the ET. Most KYZ's did come with the brake cable hole in the gusset and were T3 serial.

I think the frames are the same apart from the ET being a steel frame and the KYZ being Chromoly.

I am sure there will be other views on this, but hope the above helps. :daumenhoch:

Got this info from Jamie's Kuwahara site but it does say depends on what part of the world you from  :-\

The KYZ or sometimes called the KY Thrasher depending on your part of the world used the same frame as the ET bikes but in chrome and featured a chromoly front half and forks with a high-tensile steel rear frame with loop tail.

Link to Jamie's Kuwahara ste:

That's lovely.

Change the snidely head tube decal.

They didn't have the Japanese writing through them.

Those are from later bikes.

Didn't they drop the jap headbadge altogether about a year later in favour of the 'K' anyway?

Can't say I've ever seen one before with one on. In the flesh or in pictures ???

Only time Ive ever come across them is on the hong kong repop sets on eBay etc.

Do we know where this bike originated from?

Great find! Nice cranks on there too ;)
Why take off the headbadge? it's clearly the original one...  :police:

Some KYZ's also have other geometry (wider angle seattube / downtube for larger riders) and not always chrome plated and probably only 3 maintube cro-mo.

That is a very original looking bike.

I'd just run over it with some chrome cleaner (coke and tin foil etc) and switch the tyres over, relube and ride the bugger. :daumenhoch:
