When I turn the chainwheel round on this, it gets tighter and looser, is that the chain or chainwheel? the chainwheel seems to be true.

had the same problem with every Haro chainring I had ... its either and egg shaped chain ring... bent crank.. stretched chain or offcentre rear hub.

Pain in the arse to sort out  :)

Unfortunately the combination of one piece cranks, loose ball BB's, Stamped chainwheels, and unsealed hubs, all add up to tight spots of some sort. You can do things to minimise it, but at the end of the day there isnt much precision in how those items are made, and as such they will never spin like a set of 3pc with a sealed / machined drive train.

Dunno fella - think even 3-piece cranks, sealed hubs et al are just as bigger pain in the arse to be honest.

Only thing that's recently done it for me are spline-drive sprockets - although you still get plenty of movement in ratchet assemblies etc sadly.

Well the Chainwheel and freewheel and crank are all NOS, and I ran the chainwheel on my last bike for a few weeks with no issues, so can maybe rule that out, I got the Shimano freewheel and crank NOS at MK.

The chain is the original chain that came with the bike from new.

Take off the chain and give the cranks a spin - does the sprocket wobble?

held a centre punch to the part of the chainwheel that is exposed and the chainwheel does move to and from it, its the chainwheel.

they were all like that back in day you just used chain stay`s on the dropouts and get it somewhere between lose and tight

Think I have a happyish medium for the tension, can't really use chain tensioners though as there isn't much room and I think they would damage the paint on the back of the dropouts.
