How to remove a stuck stem ?
« on: June 22, 2006, 10:45 AM »
I have got a problem removing a stem that is stuck in to the forks.

It is an anodised red SR stem, the forks are ASCO and it is a TA frame.

I have tried WD40 and wiggling the handlebars left and right.  Nothing gives.

Removed the bars and top plate, covered stem with towel and applied a few liberal whacks with a hammer and large adjustable spanner.  Towel ripped a bit and a couple of dings in the stem, but it is still in there solid.

Loosened headset to try both of the above again, no joy. :'(

The bike is in decent nick and everything else is ok, there is no sign of rust at all.

Anyone have any suggestions please as all I can think of is applying more brute force  :knuppel2:

Cheers

Rich :daumenhoch:

Yes what Harris said turn it upside down get a long thin bar and whack it. I had the same problem before where someone had used the wrong wedge and it was jammed in there tight. This was the only way I could get it out.

Good Luck ;)

OK , you will need a vice

stem in vice , soak disel into the area of the stuck bit an leave for a few days , then try using force to " break " the rust seal

I take it that you've undone the stem bolt a few turns and then given the bolt a smart, sharp tap with a hammer to loosen the wedge?

Stick a long tube in the stem in place of the handlebars, that'll give you all the leverage you need.

I'm with hutchman & David or belting it from the underside.
I had a stuck cw seatpost, wouldn't give at all (for days & I can be an animal)
so as last resort i removed the seat & welded a long (getting on 4ft) piece of 1" box flat across the top of the post, got a mate to grip the frame and after a couple of wiggles hey presto. only lost top 10mm of the seatpost

Cheers Guys,

I haven't got any access to workshop stuff like vices so all bashing and oil treatments will be done in the kitchen or outside.

If the oil and upside down bashing on the pole doesn't work it may be a trip to the local bikeshop.

They built a lot of BMX stuff for us BITD, but it is now owned by a couple of pure MTB guys so I don't know how helpful they may be if I have no luck.

Nice one for all your help
