88 GT Performer VS Gasket Remover
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:30 PM »
As I really want to get this project off the ground, I needed to strip the paint off the F&F ahead of sending to sawzall to remove the crushed tube damage.

Looked on the forum on removing powder coat, joined a chemistry forum to understand thermoplatsics and solvents and then headed out to buy respirators, Goggles and all the usual stuff....

£60 and 4 hours later (I ran out of stuff) - I can safely say that Gasket Cleaner & Nitromors both fetch Powder Coat off - HOWEVER - they need the magic banned ingriedent substance.

I am heading back on my lunch Monday to buy more just in case it gets taken off the shelves. You cannot buy this stuff in any normal retailers B&Q etc as it has cancer warnings on the tin. Plus its not green!

Anyway -

Before, a lovely deeep Golden Yellow colour............

Forks were same colour..............

Then - The Introduction of the good stuff

Resulting in..............

And not forgetting:

Then I ran out of stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

RESTORATION ROCKS!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Although doing it in the kitchen will lead to relationship breakdowns...

just a little tip, powder coat is not thermoplastic, thermoplastic is dipped in powder at a high temperature

and powder coating is sprayed on as a powder then baked at a high temperature, the paint strippers

are for powder and not plastic :daumenhoch:

For powder coating drop me a pm
