Hi, I'm new and old and will be looking for good riding in Norfolk/Suffolk.

I have been and visited the forum a few times and have been very impressed by the quality of both the bike builds and the banter so though that I would sign up as I am sure to need some advice during my first build.

I have been inspired by Hellcats back story and will post my own up shortly once I have a little more time along with a few pictures of my bike (it's almost finished).

As I am very late to the BMX scene (43 years late) could someone explain to me what counts as old school, mid school etc?

Also, if anyone has some suggestions of good spots to ride in Norfolk/Suffolk that would be appreciated.

Did you ride as a kid or is it all completely new? What bike are you building? Looking to build?

Far as I understand it, (70's) 80's = Old / 90's Mid / 00's New.

Tell you what, as a grown up on a kids bike, I love it.

I love be able to afford far better gear than I had as a kid, I love being able to drive to all the local council ramps that just weren't there in the 80's. Also Youtube makes it much easier, all the 'how tos' & advice, so much better than a few words & pics in 80's magazines.

Something else...When I was Thai Boxing one of the instructors was in his early 50's, had been training for 10 years & he was superb. Trained very hard, as hard or harder than anyone else in the club, one of the physically fittest people I've ever met. He did 1000 situps in under 30 mins for Comic Relief one year. Anyway, meeting him & seeing his attitude made me completely re-evaluate getting older, being fit & able to train & keep progressing in a hardcore sport.

This is my first foray into BMX's other than modding and upgrading my sons.

I always had bikes as a kid but sort of missed out on the BMX scene.

My current bike count is four, well I think that I have all of the bits for the forth one.

I am building the bike around a Failure Grade 2 frame so I guess that it is new school although not sure of the actual year.

i agree with you about having better toys as an adult than when you were a kid, I think that we appreciate things more as an older kid.

Right time to take the dog for a walk and then see if I can spend a bit of time on the bike.

Finally got the bike together this evening so here are a few pictures, it was getting dark so the quality is not that good but should give you an idea.







Initial riding was good, it feels quite light to me and rolls really well.

I need to adjust the bars, stem, seat and most of all stop the brakes from squealing. Hopefully the brake pads just need toeing in a little.

I will get some better pictures sorted as well and get a spec list done.

So far so good.

I'm between Thetford and Diss so not too far from Bury St Edmunds, Norwich, Ipswich.

diss has a nice little nibbly park,sudburys a good set up,saffron waldens a tad further but a bit big for a beginner
burys hopefully getting a concrete park very soon and has a nice ramp setup near the college.im in brandon.
kingslynn has a great indoor park well worth a run to ,not massive like corby but ok to practice.

I know the place in Diss, somewhere good in Bury would be nice, Kings Lynn sounds interesting as its not too far away and I am gonna needs lots of practice so that could be a good option.

The pads look to be clear pads? they will squeal, they are a soft rubber compound, very sticky, not sure you will cure the squeak, it's something you get used to

Yes they are clear pads, I will have to do something about them as they will drive me nuts. I have some Kool stop and various V brake bits and pieces kicking around so I will see what I can sort out.

I am no where near ready to get RAD as yet, but I will keep an eye out for up and coming meets as it would be good to see how it's really done

I toed the pads in a little and the brakes sound a bit better, not silent but certainly not the squealing/chattering that they were making yesterday.

If I can't live with it as is I have some Kool Stop pads that I can try.
