Calling all riders...
« on: February 10, 2012, 12:04 PM »
Used to have a WTP few years back, now considering selling my downhill bike & getting another new school...
So can anyone recommend, empirically, any of these-
Federal, Stolen, Verde, Superstar, Sunday...? Would prefer a used custom build...
Thanks folks

Richard

Depends how much you're looking at spending fella - there's a few things to look out for, full chromo, sealed hubs, decent 3-piece, double wall rims etc.

More importantly I'd recommend getting down to an LBS and trying out some of the bikes there, as a lot of NS rides have a different geometry to what you might be used to. If you find you get on with whipper rears etc then eBay or bmx-forum is a good place to start to find cheap customs. Seattube and headtube angles are different, stand-over heights and shorter rear T's.

Bmx-forum's a half decent place to find reviews of NS parts as well (ignoring the fan-boys). If you start with just a frame/forks you can end up chucking a lot of money up the wall buying the extra bits and bobs.

I ride a Federal custom build and fooking love it.  :smitten:

Light, strong, long and the geometry does not feel as extreme versus OS as some other brands do. Also a cool heritage to the brand. The only downside is that they do not make completes, and they tend to be expensive. Keep your eyes open for a cheap secondhander going here or on the bay.  :daumenhoch:

I tried WTP and really could not get on with the shape, but I cannot comment on the others.  :-\

Yeah just wondered if anyone had views on those suggested frames... I found the geom of the Trust to be about right.
I suppose for a used complete i would say around £300/£350.
What are you using...?!

They were on the build I bought second hand from our very own Gashead.  :smitten:

I have tweaked some of the components, but the Frame, Forks, Bars, Wheels and Crank where all on it. I got a fantastic deal from our Nick, probably one that could not be bettered, to be honest

Check with Wini; he just bought a stunning brand new WTP Trust for under four brick, I believe. Beautiful to look at (the bike, not Mark) and he loves the way it rides and feels.  :daumenhoch:

They are expensive, mate, unfortunately; £220 for a brand new frame only.  :'(

Good completes can be found on the bay if you are lucky, or pop up a Wanted on RAD?  :daumenhoch:

Don't laugh - but this fella:

S&M built Fit Eddie V3 frame - it's got a reeeeeal layed back seattube so the TT feels a little longer (it's a 21" if you measure it, feels more like 21.5/22) and it makes you ride further over the rear triangle (which is good for me as I tend to lean forward too much = over the bars every now and again as my teeth will testify). Manuals are p1ss easy on it.

Forks are Sunday Morning 2.1's, Profile cranks (solid spindle not GDH), Tree splined sprocket, G-Sport Ratchet rear/Mamorset front, Eclat Bondi rims (normal spokes not double butted as found they ping too much for me), S&M XLT Redneck, Oddy Lumberjack bars (basically the same as Slambars).

£300-350 will get you a nice secondhand custom  :daumenhoch:

Thats not too bad for brand new... I got a deal on my NS (the company!) frame & it wasn't far off that price... I know a custom 20" will cost alot less than my custom 26"...!
A couple of yrs back i had the opportunity of buying a custom Federal for about £350...! I think it was left hand drive too...

 ;D

Had the frame and other bits for a while now - new peds, grips, seat, forks, pivotal etc since SBD powdered the frame. The frame needed it as it was fooked :)

Used to look something like this:

But with an integrated pivotal post - out came the hacksaw for that........

Its an M6 with a Double Barrel shock & Bos Anniversary Rares up front. Really planted but the Barrel takes some time to set up. The Rares are wierd but brilliant!

Thats a nice looking frame...it should have Reign In Blood painted on it!
Was the frame really rusted or scratched...?

I'd dinged, pitted, scratched and generally shafted it - and I'd be buggered shelling out £350 for another frame when there's life in the old dog yet :)

Never thought of that.....a Slayer themed frame.......

Yeah I think weight is a primary concern. Do you know if Federal are one of the lightest frames...?
