Just use an odyssey slick one mate you get inner and outer and it is a rear. You can get seperate inners for these as well. Normally around £3

If you're ever going to barspin with a single cable you want a linear cable as the brake can lock-up with a standard coiled brake sleeve.
Oddy do a Slic Linear for about a tenner, or save yourself a few quid and get an Xposure or Stolen one for about £7

If you do cut it down make sure you use very good brake cable cutters. Linear outer is a bitch to get thro

I use a small hacksaw to cut the outer cable...
Does a neater job than Kev's method, i used to do the same but then struggled to push the inner cable through

If you go for a linear cable, and cut it, make sure you use one of the spare ferrules (normally supplied with the cable) on the cut end of the outer housing - the inner braid has a tendency to slowly 'creep' out if you don't.

Bendy, to answer the question; no mate. You can't buy the wrong one these days - any brand will do. As others have said, spend another couple of quid on the linear type. A few drops of light oil or GT85 down it when you fit it, bob's yer uncle.
No set length, entirely up to you.
