1994 Dirt Bike project
« on: February 08, 2012, 05:53 PM »
Seeing Betty's Dirtbike project got me stoked to show you guys mine.  :)

Back in 94 I was around 14 years old and I picked up my first S&M direct from the old warehouse in Santa Ana. Moeller was really cool to me and I left that day with a green Dirt Bike with the Green Day "Dookie" graphics(SMD 4479), some Pitchforks, a copy of 44 Something, the 1994 catalogue, hat, and a ton of stickers. To this day, I still have my frame, my copy of 44 Something, hat and the catalogue. I built it up mostly using parts off of an old GT, within that year I got one of the first Rednecks and 1st gen Prince Albert cranks from Mental Jimmys. Years later, most those parts ended up on a T1 that I ended up selling. I even sold my Dirt Bike frame at some point.

Well I recently got my frame back! It even has the whip girl sticker I cut out and put on the top tube when I was a teenager! :smitten: I've decided to collect all the right parts and build it back up exactly like I had it in 94, a childhood replica setup if you will. I've got some of the parts here, a few more on the way and I'm still looking for the rest...

Lovely  :daumenhoch: You can tell by the lack of rust it don't rain too much in sunny CA :)

Love that frame  :smitten: these things are common as muck at the min  ;D I messaged the woman who had one listed on eBay, which didn't sell - but she had sold it  :( so I'm on the hunt too.

Thanks fellas! Can't wait to get it built! :)

Back in 94 when I first got my frame my buddy Will also picked one up. His was just like it but blue, obviously from the same batch, no 990 brake mounts and being a 94 it was the first year for the single thick dropouts that were welded on both sides. 990 mounts were still an "option" and of the few of these "Dookie" Dirt Bikes I've seen pop up in recent years, one of them had 990 brake mounts and their serial numbers were fairly close.

Great frame and top story. Love it.

I was at S&M in 94. I have a photo somewhere of the rack of bikes. Im sure there are Dookie dirtbikes in the pic. One might have been yours.
I still have the Green Holmes that I took off the shelf for a mate. Still with the same paint and decals (and the same Pitchforks, and Slams)
I also have one of those catalogues  :daumenhoch:

While i was there the first batch of PA cranks came in but they all got sent back cos they were miss-aligned. I came back to the UK before the next batch came in and by the time I got a set they were the mk2 design.

I'd love to see that photo of the frame rack Alex!

All the parts I'm using for the build will be identical to how I originally had it setup. That GT seat, purple Jive Tenticles, black Pitbulls,... 8)

These are the used parts I'm still looking for...

-1" threaded Pitchforks
-Brand X ti straight seatpost without built in guts
-Sun Mistral 20" hoops
-GT sealed hubs
-black GT platform pedals 9/16
-44t silver Profile Ripsaw sprocket
-2 generic P.E.G.S.
-black GT epoch headset

Thats great that you now have a photo of your bike, before it was even yours.

Here is my Holmes. They are like twins, or same-age bros, or something  :-\

Ive built it up with some cool bits, but not era correct. Its got S&M tires, pedals, green redneck, and later PA cranks. (I forgot, when I got it I also picked up a pad set for it). Sun Mistral rims on DK hubs. And check it out, its even got the same seat as yours  :daumenhoch:

Great story  :daumenhoch:

All this talk of Dirt Bikes has me wondering where my old oversized orange one is now.  Bought off Wirewheel on here a couple of years ago - 1 1/8" head tube, 22.2 seatpost, 990 mounts, had been powdered white - I sprayed it orange and built it up with black midschool Primo parts and current Dirtbike decals - may not have been era-correct but damn it was a good looking bike.  Lost all the pics when fotopic went down and foolishly sold it to buy an NG (yeah I sold that one too  :idiot2: ).

Here's a pic of the 1" dirtbike frame that also came home with me (custom painted textured matt black, and custom decals cos normal ones didnt stick to the paint)

You can also see the Prince Albert Box with a set of HAF stickers in (I dont know where either of those went  :-[)

One of them things - trying to remember where everything went! Is that a TNT stem on the DB?

Yep, TNT stems were nice. I used it till I got my redneck when they came out later that year.
I think I swapped the TNT stem for a redneck a few years ago
