The Size of your front sprocket ?
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:40 PM »
I have a 9 tooth on the rear and at the time went for what seems like the most popular choice of 25T on the front, so my question is , what other combinations are commonly used any why ? ( and by why I mean what do YOU feel are the benefits over other combos)

I run 10T - with either a 28T or 30T - find the 30T is a lot easier to do roll-backs with, but like me splined 28T for everyday gearing :)

im running 30/10

the 30 is because im faithful to chainstay brake mounts rather than seatstay, and any smaller and my chain rubs on the brake bosses

it works for me.

Fair enough, but who still makes a 33t sprocket?

As a guide go for a ratio of 2.75:1

So 25/9, 32/12, 44/16  etc

On my Ripper I am running 32/12, but the chain is just catching on the chainstay.  No bother.  It will wear a groove into it.

Would 25/11 work? Or would I be pedalling like mad and getting nowhere?

25/9

old school set up - so if i run a 44/16 and find it better for long haul and speed - but also like a 42/16 for quicker feel off the start and for better balance on turns

so what would the same be on my Stereo Electro for the same feel as above ?

a 42x16 = 51.2''

closest would be 25x9 (you already have)= 54.2''
so unless you can get a smaller front sprocket, 22tooth then this IS the closest running with a 9tooth rear

an 11x30 = 53.2''
a 44x16= 53.6''

hope this helps

You can get 23t sprockets, I have had a 24t Profile imperial in the past, Sold it on now though, Had it to make the gearing easier for my son.

yeah, thats what i was trying to say, with a 9tooth, he would need to go lower than 25 down to around 22 or 23 if he really wants.

the gearing is so close though i personally dont think its worth it, And stick with 25/9.
