NEW 1/3 scale bike project!!! New update.... SEAT!!!
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:48 PM »
So i decided to start a new project after the ripper went down so well, some of you may not like this but I'm a general bike head and decided I was going to do a mountain bike!

I wanted to do a full suspension bike as it would make a nice model and be as different as possible from the bmx model. So after a fair bit of research i still hadn't decided which bike, whatever it was going to be I'd need to get my hands on one. There isn't really any standout or iconic retro full suspension bikes that fitted the bill so I thought it'd be cool to do a relevant or famous bike linked with someone important.

Now, If you haven't heard of Steve Peat then google him but having met him about 15 years ago on a snowboard trip I knew he was a sound bloke so looked him up on facebook and explained who I was and what i was doing.
He was more than keen to get involved and told me he still had his 2009 santa cruz v10 that he won the world DH champs on. He continued to tell me it was in his loft still built up as it was the day he raced it and that i could come and take it away for reference for as long as i needed. BINGO!!!

I know it's not retro but It's a very relevant bike to the history of downhill mountain biking and it looks the absolute nuts.

So i went up and met him and came home with a bit of cycle history and a WHOLE lot of work ahead of me!!!

This is the bike, it's a v10 but has slightly custom geometry for him and a few custom parts not to mention the custom steve peat livery.

I thought I'd start with the spokes as thats one part that I didn't tackle last time and thought it could give me some problems.

I knocked up some rough hubs and rims just to see how the lacing went, bearing in mind that I've never laced a real wheel let alone a 1/3 scale one.

This black one was the first attempt and has 0.8mm brass rod for spokes which is a bit fat really as the real spokes are about 2.1 mm so 0.8 x 3 is 2.4mm and looks a bit bulky, plus the spokes on the real bike are blade type and are flat so measure 2.1mm wide but much less thickness.

So I tried again but this time i used 0.5mm brass and i squashed them in a machine vice to flatten them which made them almost perfect in measurement and look correct.

I laced it up on a jig so it spins pretty true, obviously theres no thread and nipple so I cant tune it properly but this is close enough for a model. The finished wheel will have little mock nipples but they wont be threaded.

Cheers for looking and I'll keep you posted with updates.  :daumenhoch:

haha, dunno but I'll try and keep motivated. Hopefully not 4 years like the ripper.  I've sent these pics to Steve and he's pretty excited about it. I'm going to do him one for letting me borrow his beloved bike.

nah i know it wasnt a dig, and yeah, ridiculous amount of parts. look at the tuf neck stem i made for the ripper then look at the stem on the v10 (its part of the forks but insanely more complicated than a tuf neck.

The madness begins again ,prepare to be amazed    :coolsmiley:

We all know if anything like the unbelieveable attention to detail  the Ripper had , is going to be re-created in this bike ,

we are all in for a treat  :4_17_5:

BTW Joe , excellent choice of candidate Steve Peat is THE legend of  DH/MTB

Gonna be a great tribute  :)

Yeah, dunno whats wrong with me. seriously, if i haven't got  something to make or something to think about how to make i start losing the plot.

look at this fancy dress costume i made the other day, I only wore it to a house party but once i had the idea i couldn't not make it... weird! :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2:
