1 1/8th fork conversion on my 91 Sport
« on: January 12, 2012, 10:25 PM »
Finally got my 99 Haro Mirra 540 Air back from those idiots Yodel who lost it sending it to Wales  :daumenhoch: so I had some Haro 1 1/8th forks to use.

Decided to move the 94 Sport on so it was back to the neon lime 91 Sport and time for the fork conversion.

Thought that there was no way it would work out but it turned out to be easy  :)

Read over the info that James Voivod had pointed out and info from Discostu and Gra The Ruler and did it in about half an hour.

The only thing I needed that I didn't have was an extra set of bearings as there isn't enough in one race to fill up the bearing cup once you take them out of the race... I probably need 2/3 more bearings in each cup but once it bedded in and I re-tightened it all it has been sweet.

Having nice fat fork dropouts and chunky forks is a plus with the obvious extra of a stem thats more dependable and doesn't come loose when I ride  :daumenhoch:

Thanks to all who helped with info and parts on this ( thanks to Dordy for some Haro forks and a headset  :daumenhoch: )

Well done ed. you have done a nice tidy job of that conversion. Did you use beartrap cups?  And mix and match spare headset bearings until you got a set to fit?  You will find it will come a little loose once the bearings have bedded in after a couple of rides.  But you just adjust it up again. And then it stays Nice and tight without loosing again :daumenhoch:  defiantly a good mod to do if you want to make your old ride into a usable rider. The only problem is finding suitable forks and stem. Which you have done.  :)

Any 1.1/8" forks and stem will do.
You need regular 1" unsealed cups (of no particular type), couple of races of bearings, the 1.1/8 bottom ringy thing that goes on the forks and the top hardware from 1.1/8"
Plenty of grease, and loose ball it, simple.

Watch out for mystery tight spots though ;)  If you get one try removing a ball top and bottom.

A good advantage of this conversion is that you can run forks with lugs for a decent front brake.  And you get to pick from a wide range of forks.

What I ment about using the right type of fork and stem was to fit a set that go well with the 1" frame your using. Some of the 80's frames had really small tubing and to stick a chunky 1"1/8th fork and stem combo makes it look wrong. For me the aim is to do the conversion in a way that it looks like the bike was built that way not converted. I also didn't use the loose ball bearing method as I managed to find some cage bearings that fitted my beartrap cups. So I haven't experienced any tight spots. I know loose bearings do work well. But you have to leave a gap almost a bearing wide for them to run free. I would imagine the next stage of modding would be to have cups made that will accept the new 1"1/8th inter grated cartridge bearing type headset. If I convert any more rides I might go in this direction to see if it will work. It won't be for a while though as all my current builds are going to be era correct give or take a couple of years.  :daumenhoch:
