early article here from NY Times (Dec 1893) mentions the guy from the Edison film (Eugene A Neidert) performing slightly before Bob invented freestyle

Pretty much since bikes were invented people have been trying to do tricks on them
as for racing bikes round an off road track,the americans just gave it a name,BMX.
