MASSIVE thanks to discostu!!!!
« on: December 22, 2011, 01:42 PM »
Stu popped round last night to pick up some bits from me and while here we got talking about a Boa I recently stripped and attempted to polish which came out okish.

Well I had another set of arms for spare and Stu kindly offered to take them away and have a go himself, so bear in mind that at 9pm last night these where in the standard black finish and now not even 24 hours later these are looking SUPERB!!!

I am so pleased with what you have done Stu, MASSIVE thanks and look forward to building these back up for the new bike.  :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5:

Stu - try Sid1972 as he gave me a red anno'd Boa ages ago I never used so I gave it back to him a month or two back. It was a front with the massive fat bolt that won't fit standard forks, so I assume that's what you mean :daumenhoch:
Still limping......

He's after the smaller spindle Spen, I'm in dialogue with someone on the museum about one for him.  :daumenhoch:

Yep, the 6mm spindles are a bit harder to get hold of, I had to get my two from the Museum.  Mind you, do those fookers ever stop you!  Awesome brakes

If I can't get hold of a 6mm one I will look into the bigger 10mm type and turn down the shaft to 6mm. It depends on price. Let's see what Robbo comes up with first :daumenhoch:

At least I know it can be polished up ok!   ;D

Yeah Ed, I got the rear from you and ended up buying another set from the States just to get the front to match

Love the look of the polished ones!  Sweeet!

Very sexy!!  So, what were the steps to get them looking so hot?  Strip the paint, wet&dry upto about 1200, polish-ta-feck…??

Im still not sure about how to bling chrome.  With say, a aluminium stem, you can wet&dry until you bleed, then polish.  But, when something is chrome plated Im guessing wet&dry will remove the thin chrome layer..

Good results!!

The steps are as follows.

1- strip the brake arms using paint stripper. I used nitromors in a green tin. This took an hour and a half as they had been powdered.

2-file down any rough edges/casting marks. I used a mixture of files and my belt sander with 180grit.

3-polish up. I use a polishing kit I bought from eBay. It contains a cone shaped arbour that fits into your electic drill. This then has 3 different sizal mops and 3 grades of polishing block. You start with the course mop and polish. This will remove all the rubbing down/filing marks. Then you go down to the medium course mop and medium course polish. Once you reach this stage you can tell if there are any bits you have missed with the course mop. So you go back to the course mop and course polish and polish the marks out. Once they are gone you then go back to the medium mop again. When your happy you clean it up with a cloth and give it a final polish using the 3rd buffing mop and the buffing polish. You should now have a mirror finish like this.  :daumenhoch:
The drill I use is a black and decker with a screw in handle that is gripped into a vice. It also has a lock button so the drill will turn without having to keep the button pressed down.  It is easier to hold your work piece against the buffer than to hold the drill/buffer against the work piece.

Beware the metal gets very hot so gloves need to be used. And also you get filthy :)

You can polish chrome but it is hard to get good results. Also chrome is only microns thick so it is easy to polish through. I normally have a go. But with a view to getting it rechromed if it looks shite!  :daumenhoch:
