dont feel right
« on: November 07, 2011, 10:01 PM »
thinking about something newer to try...........

so over the wkend managed to a go on a new school bike , for a good half hour rathr than having the new shiney bike hastely snatched back before i scratch it ,or rub the anno of the rims with the squeeky brake  :LolLolLolLol:

now the numbers added up ok 21" tt  75deg  ht blah blah blah,    set up was not to young kid  style with the bars far enough back to rest your sack on but looked right for a fat midd life crisis candidate,  and was actually owned by one,    ;D,      what i found was i felt as though all my weight was quite far forward ,  rather than centred over the seat area,   back end felt real light whilst trying to get the thing of the ground ,  is this normal with new school bikes ,    currently riding an 03 macneil which has pretty much the same geometary asside from 74 deg ht and that feels more centred , and stable.

is it just a case of thats how things are now,  as most of the new frames seem to have the same numbers attached to the specs are they all simillar to ride , is it just the weight ,  ?  my os race bike is down in the low 20lbs weight with a shorter tt 20.5" but that also rides with you centered over the seat area, and feels like a long frame,   although has more os angles

suppose its a how long is a bit of string question,  opinions would be apprciated  :daumenhoch:

Your weight feeling forward could be because a lot of n/s frames have a high bottom bracket, it was a short frame or the bars were fairly low. The back end feeling light could be because most n/s rear ends are short, around 13" is common nowadays. Also they weigh a lot less!

Did you have the bars at the same angle as the forks? If too far forward that would have brought your weight too far forward.

i'll probs get shit for it but i've got to say it,

watching fully grown blokes trying to ride their old school bikes i cant help but laugh and shake my head,

its just a lesson in pointlessness,

like digging out a pair of old size 5 trainers, squeezing your size 10 feet into them then trying to walk around in them whilst looking serious,

its a fools errand.

i'll stick with my "21.5 tt cheers.....

to simplify,

modern frames have longer top tubes to fit taller riders,

the shorter back end is to keep the entire bike length down so its still compact, nimble and maneuverable,

dear joe

maybe you wouldn't get the anticipated 'shit' you refer to if there was a bit of humour in your comments, instead you tend to come across a bit miserable/condescending. for the majority of people on here the first thing they want to do after signing up is get on an OS bike and have a bit of fun

as the home page of this site states....
"Welcome to RADBMX.CO.UK, The UK's biggest and best Old School BMX Site!

Home of the UK's old school scene, be it racing 80's bikes or restoring and rebuilding your dream bike from years gone by. Inside on the forums you can ask questions, see pics of some of the best 80s BMXs you will ever have seen. And maybe buy that bike you always wanted. So come in and share that part of your life that was BMX and meet some other idiots who have done the same!! "

but then being an intelligent guy you know this already, which makes me wonder if you don't secretly crave the backlash  ???

feel the love, don't fight it  :-*

hugs

griff

PS I'm also looking for a NS bike to play on, I imagine I will also look a tit on that too but I bet I have a laugh along the way

Did someone mention short people who should know better? Ed209 will be along in a minute then ;-)

I get the NS technology and geometrty but am enjoying my 19.25" TT currently and will eventually have a NS but I feel a bit of a peado on them. At least on an OS all the stares you get are soon turned to a nod when a classic bike restored and being ridden becomes apparent. I liked Rich Clean's NS the other day when I rode it but I'm never gonna get 10' out the coping and am just enjoying giving this a go again after all these years off it.

Jim, stick with what you have for a bit longer and only move on if you think the bike is holding you back mate. Simples.
Still limping......

Whatever.... it's all BMX, and that is why we love it; whatever we may prefer to build / collect / drool over / stare at / ride / fall off.

Fcuk me Ed,,,, you've just fallen right into this.

Did you see the recent Top Gear where they pitted some old winning rally car (mk1 Escort I think), against a new production car of some fairly ordinary sort? The Escort got it's arse kicked.

But we all know (Joe will agree) which one we'd go out for a spin in on a sunny afternoon.

BMX is EXACTLY the same.

There's no point going to a modern skatepark on an 80s bike an expect to get around the place in comfort. There's 30 fcuking years between em!

But getting together with like-minded people, having a cruise about, even racing in a specialist class is absolutely fine. Happens in motorsport every weekend as we all know.

This view was compounded for me last night at T1. I saw a couple of riders who clearly had some talent and balls, being held back by their machinery.

Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy...........................

Back on topic;

Of course it takes time getting used to NS geometry. Plus, this is a hard sport. If someone genuinely wants to progress their riding then they'll need that ns bike and they'll need to apply themselves. Expect it to take weeks to get over that 'don't feel right' feeling. Pretty normal if you ask me.

Also, I often say to people if I'm advising (preaching at) them, to imagine in their minds eye that their head, shoulders, bars, forks and wheel are as one. The back end will follow the front wherever you go. Having your weight centred over the seat area is no good these days, you're too far back. You'll do well to clear owt and you'll never, ever nose a jump in if you're stood over the seat. Dead sailors aside of course  :LolLolLolLol:

Where you need to be is over the centre of the bike overall, and that point has moved over the years. To achieve it now, lean forward, get your head in. bent arms. The good ole' @attack position'.  Watch any pro ride, you'll see it.

Joe's right of course. In context though. Drag a kickturn ramp out and session that for an afternoon, it'll be the newschoolers that look daft.

it is worth also nothing that while the "old car new car" analogy might be a fun one,

it IS a bit on the pointless side,

cars are meant to fit a wide range of adult sizes,

bmx bikes are not,

the vast majority of 80's bikes are designed with a 10 to 14 year old in mind,

unless you're five feet tall that "18 top tube is'nt going to help you at all if you're actually serious about riding,

of course, if all you want to do is sit around wanking and chatting shit with the other "oldschoolers"

it's just fine.
