own build or pre-built??
« on: November 07, 2011, 05:29 PM »
alrite chaps,
ive been thinking for a while on whether to build my own new school bike or buy a pre-built one new/second hand..i do prefer the idea of an own build so i can choose the bits i want as there is usually something on a bike when you buy it that you change almost straight away, although would work out more expensive buying every single item, but done over a few months wont seem as bad i suppose, ive sourced a couple of new G-sport chrome rims and a nice pair of ody evo2 brakes, all new..just waiting on a price for the g-sport hubs which i know will be expensive..dont want it to be a cheap build, want a nice bit of kit but i went to a shop on saturday just to have a look at some frames etc to get an idea of prices and whats about this was the shop.. http://www.pijin.co.uk/  helpful blokes in there but blew me away a bit with there tech? talk.. :idiot2:...i know the TT size would need to be about 20.75 but then they were on about long-short back end and angles etc, i thought  :wtf: you on about, ive only ever bought old school before (years ago) so a bit of an amatuer on the new school front...not sure whether just to buy a complete bike as i dont have the knowledge to do it myself or what do you reckon?
if you havent fallen asleep reading this any help would be appreciated..
this is my latest ride bought from robbo on here so looking for a frame around the same sort of size i suppose..
i dont build my bikes, never quite got the hang of it, maybe if i did i wouldnt need to ask any daft questions..got a mate who owns a bike shop who helps me..

:) Stock bikes can be cheaper but if you do a custom you can get exactly what  you want.If you buy a stock complete you`ll prob end up changing things like seat/grips/pedals etc.A lot of completes, although getting better are built to a certain price & you see some at over £500 that are only even part cromo frames.Think what you want the bike for,ie you don`t want a mega high BB/super tight back end if you`re riding dirt all the time... Shop around, look for special offers and see if any mates can get you stuff at trade price & you`ll save a fortune.

i sound like a stuck record i know,
but assuming being on RAD you're in your 30's/40s i'd be looking at a "21 tt frame with a lowish stable bb and regular rear end,

this would be worth asking the tt length, i'd ride it anyday....
