Cook bros crank confusion.
« on: December 24, 2010, 05:51 PM »
Well confused here  :LolLolLolLol:

I'd love a set for a build next year but after googling and searching like mad i keep coming across cranks that came off of mountain bikes.

Are these the same as what were used back in the day or are they a no no on 84 race bikes as they're a later model.  :-\ There's not too much info on them to be honest.

Any help/pictures gratefully accepted as then at least i know what i'm looking for.

Cheers.

For my pennies worth Andy.....

The first BMX ones came out in 1981 and the 80's ones DO NOT have a groove on the inside of the arm.

The very earliest ones I believe are engraved logo and then they were laser etched.

That's all I know mate :daumenhoch:

Ones with the groove in are the RSR Series (1996) Crank Arms they were used on MTB's although make cracking cranks for an O/S racer in 181mm format.... :coolsmiley:

Although there were specific ones made for MTB's (Hyper C's)

Cook Bros nowadays....seem to be into fixies....

The gooseman is correct the logo's were etched in  :daumenhoch:
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

Hi guys I can say that the JMC rainbow racing team were sponsord by cook bros for cranks in 84 /85 the man to ask is THE RED BARON
Dennis as he worked in their Factory and rode for them back in the day they are one of the best cranks on the market Clive Gosling aka Gossa may be able to shed some more light on this matter

1st Gen = Script writing on arms (no length engraved)

2nd Gen = Script writing on arms (+ plus lenght also engraved in script writing)

3rd Gen = Small Square Boxed writing on arms

Cooks = Cranks with groved out sides (top & bottom)

4th Gen= Large Square boxed writing on arms / solid arms with cut grove on back.

5th Gen = Road bike/ mtb hollowed out backs

The 'Bros' in Cook Bros fell out and split up, hence Cooks Quality products came to light as well as Cook Bros Racing.

I sold an almost new set of 181's to Biagio, gutted........

at a guess I would say that 3rd Gen is probably closest to 84, although 2nd gen would also work well as would Cook's

Dan

I know this is an old thread of mine but i've dibbed some but i'm arguing with myself over the year of them.

Judging from what i've read over the last hour i'm still confused.  :LolLolLolLol:

Would these be ok for an 86 Zeronine build or a no no on the era front as i think they're an 89 crank.  :'(

I'm so desperate for a set of these cranks but i want the bike to be correct. Sorry for knicking your photos yannick.   :)

Its hard to tell Andy from the photos, they do look like nice early Cook's cranks - It looks from these photos that the sides aren't grooved out which would make them early generations by my knowledge.

I would think they are just inside of the 85/86 mark your looking for.

But before your take my word as gospel the American sites are better informed on Cook Bros and Cooks
