" Next Monday British Cycling members will have a head start on the competition for the second time in a month with priority access to another major cycling event. In May 2012 the UCI BMX World Championships will visit Birmingham for the first time with a one off BMX track being created in the heart of the city at the NIA, specially for the event. With the event just 11 weeks before the Olympics and offering the last opportunity for riders to qualify for the Games, the 2012 World Championships is a must see sporting occasion.
Competition at the World Champs kicks off on Thursday 24 May but in an innovative twist to the traditional schedule, Friday and Saturday night will make the maximum possible use of the NIA's capabilities as an arena to host two spectacular nights of racing and entertainment that will keep spectators on the edge of their seats throughout.
Friday night sees non-stop knock out action as the Challenge Class riders 17-24, 25-29, 30+ Men and 17+ Women compete in quarter finals through to finals before the Elite riders take to the track to decide the first of their World Championship events, the time trial. Saturday night focuses on the Elite riders with Championship racing for Elite and junior Men and Women forming the high points of a night that will also see the stars of the future, the 15-16 Boys and Girls as well as the stars from the past, the Masters competing.
With over 2000 of the world’s best riders converging on the city the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships in Birmingham promises to be the must attend occasion for BMX fans old and new.
