freewheel quick ???
« on: June 01, 2006, 01:49 PM »
how come my freewheel just spins on and off?
not matter what i do i cant get it to fix, it simply screws in and then screws off
is this because there is meant to be a washer between hub and freewheel?
if so ive lost mine anyone got a spare!?

ive never seen a washer.

describe your problem more thoroughly, i cant get to grips with what you mean, freewheels are easy to get on, its geting them off that is a problem.

ok sorry dude...
what i mean is i screw it on as tight as i can then i fit it to the bike but when i pedal the wrong way it loosens the freewheel
then when i take the wheel of i can lift the freewheel right off,
i know they are difficult to get off so theres somethin up if i can just screw it on and off,
its a diamond back 16t freewhel on a raleigh magwheel

i can only asssume it is an issue with the threads.

they usually screw on, and the force of pedalling on them tightens them up onto the alloy hub.

if it is easier for the freewheel to turn off the thread, than to "freewheel" it must be incredably stiff, or your theads are fooked? although i wouldnt have thought That could happen.

i dont think you can thread them on the wrong way...although if you could that would make it turn off i think...

Odd, is it possible you are putting it on the wrong way round - not sure that you can do this anyway???

yeah i thought that at first but as u sa its not really possible
the side facing out it the side with the grooves rather than the smooth side with the branding
that correct

If you have the wheel on your lap and take the freewheel to the hub, you should be turning it clockwise to put it on (same direction as when pedaling). Once on if you turn the teeth of the fw anticlockwise they should "freewheel".

Just thinking whilst writing this, someone else may be able to confirm if fw's run on the left side of the bike would have a different thread (iguess they would need to).

yes, i thought about the left hand drive thing.

did it say it was for a normal drivetrain on the box?

yeah i seem to have alleviated it now
i was tightening the wheel bolts to tight so the freewheel was getting held agains the chain tensioner and therefre loosening it when it turned.
make sense???

my last remaining problem is that theres a slight wiggle in the wheel when it spins but all cones etc are tight and it doesnt move side to side when i move it when its stationary so everything seems tight?

Sounds like the wheel needs truing, or it may be an illusion - ie not the wheel but the tyre mounted to it!

is it a wiggle like it's out of balance or something?
may be the tyre, or even the rim if it's pinned and not welded...
