about a week ago i noticed my brake kept slipping so i took a look and id pretty much ripped off the brake mount and cracked the other one

after a chat with moeller and 4down they have agreed to replace the frame foc

which there not obliged to do as its already a warranty replacement

so a big big big thank you to chris and the guys at 4down

using a proper rear brake which im going to change just to be safe

think ive just been unlucky, i havent heard of any other dirtbikes cracking on the brake mounts and my mates randy brown v1 has been fine

Doesn't inspire much confidence in the wobbly screw in mounts on my ATF... $:-\$

They rip out fooking up the threads in the frame, seen it happen a couple of times...

And they slowly work loose, noisy brake due to the arms wobbling and the lever going slack being the usual warnings

Damn! Makes you think, are these American made frames as good as everyone thinks they are? Especially for the top dollar prices. At least your getting a replacement no problem.

Had these suggestions before but i don't ride as much nowadays so it doesn't bother me, too lazy to fix it proper...

nothing wrong with the american made frames, i bet just as many taiwan frames get broke too

one thing with s&m and 4down is they have a damn good warranty dept

talking of a american made frame v's a taiwan made frame cost, prices are changing have a read of this

spoke to 4down again today, old frame has been sent back to them and new one will be in the uk in 2 weeks

tis a problem with seatstay brake mounts never been the best place to run brakes the only reason is to get the brakes away from the chain line , still top result from the S&M boys

that kind of customer care has got to be worth a few extra quid

Surely all S&M frame brake mounts are manufatured and welded the same way, will be checking my LTF as I use the rear brake a lot.
out of interest would you say your particular hard on the rear brake?

i use my rear brake all the time as i do alot of rear wheel stuff and i ride 6-7 hours a week

got to be some scientific explanation ,

but looking at it from a pudding point of view ..... pull the brake , blocks stick to rim, wheel going forward, blocks move forward, forces transfered through caliper to mounting ponit, forces moving away from fame. Seems to be obvious to me , bung em where there is something to stop em moveing away from the direction of force so that it stops the movement.... ie chainstays,..... forces move forward ... stopped by chain stays

Having spouted out my pov i'm pretty sure that this is one of the very few s7m frames that is faulty , probably tempreture in workshop or a just the friday afternoon fook it that caused the problem ..........

the reason the frame has failed is simply due to bad welding.

the weld should be stronger than the surrounding tube.

Jim,your theory about putting the mounts on the chainstay is a sound one

,not sure if you could geta v-brake in there though $:-\$ , maybe a brake booster plate would help,with the mounts on the seat stays

For sure! Totally! I ALWAYS run my brake on the top of the chainstay. It also means you can use the seat tube for the cable-stop so there is no chance of it snapping off (which happens sometimes with the mount under the top tube).

AND it means the cable is much more in line ... but dont get me started on that one!

Seen a Standard w/a V-brake under the seatstays,a weird option & maybe the noodlel would snag & break..

interesting topic chaps

never seen v brakes mounted anywhere but on top of seatstays , i think realy its a non starter to put em anywhere else, plus as Voivod says the noodle is going to be in the way unless your running one of the low profile posh roller ones,

As Rooski says with v brakes you can always run stiffning plates to stop the sideways movement / leverage on the mounts , used some on a trials bike with v brakes as the frame was flexing due to amount of force being applied to the rim by the brakes, cured the problem and made the v brake even better, in fact they were almost too good if that's possible?

now got to come up with a 990 one , great idea, will start drawing one up , then see how long it takes me to find one on the net that's been in production for years already

i think the 990 mount underneath is just realy a way to clean up the line and look of the frame , and also to free up the chain line to allow for the newer smaller gearing options, this is probably down to the frame design restrictions with useing smaller mid bb's unless of course there is some science behind it , just can't see the advantge,

in theory the mount should be as good as one on top of the tube after all it's welded and made the same way , the only difference i can see is the way the force is applied to the mount .............

i'll stop actually just made me chuckle a bit wtf do i know anyhow
