Hi all - last minute panic building ready for this Saturday's ride!!

How the flip to I get the housing nut off the crank arm?  Im trying to swap the chainwheel but I cant get the nut off (the thing with 3 notches in it).  I'll take it along to Halfords tomorrow night as I hoping there is special tool with 3 notches in it??

I tried to hold it in a vice but no joy..

Special tool??

ta,

Paul

Cool - ill give that a go before popping to Halfords.

btw, it does screw the normal way on the chainring side??  eg, anti-clockwise to remove??  (obviously reversing that if attacking from the back as show in the photo).

Paul

Yep, there's a spanner that fits. Are there no OSers near you that might have one ???
I think looking at the back of the sprocket, it comes off anti-clockwise.

I have the exact same problem with a 1PC and Chainring.

I have tried the hammed and chisel method and it won't budge

Yes it's a normal thread on this side of the crank, not the opposite thread like the other side of the crank.

Stand the chainring vertically on a hard surface (on a pile of rags if you need to keep the chainring) and hit the side that needs to go downwards towards the ground. You need to shock it off to undo it if it's old as it's designed to tighten up when pedalling.

If it won't move, try release oil like plusgas or something, or petrol to remove the grease then deisel to creep into the gaps, then hit it again.

Finally, use a chisel and a 3-1/2 lb club hammer and it will shift eventually.
Still limping......

Hi - I just popped to my local bike store and got a £6:50 tool that did the trick with no effort.  I put the link at the top of the thread.

Ta for peoples advice, as always..
