No contest, 1 1/8 threadless! Stronger, a headset that doesn't come loose all the time & easier to set up  :daumenhoch:

I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

There's a great article in Ride Magazine approx 2 years ago that was written by George French (long term rider and founder/owner of G-SPORT).

The artcile is all about the advancement of BMX bikes/parts. there's a great bit on headsets poking fun at the old 1" threaded headsets and how we were constantly tightening them.

If you can find that article it will make you think/laugh.

Keep the Faith. L

You are ALL missing the point here!!! (haha, I like that start  :knuppel2:).

1" headsets are shit, but it wasnt the end of the world using them. I managed to keep mine tight, but that wasnt the real problem with 1" shafted stem/forks. The real improvement with 1 1/8 clampon was the strength!

With a 1" shafted setup you have the stem on the inside and the headset threads on the outside ...... so the thickness of the fork steer tube is fixed. There is nothing you can do. The top of the steer stube is kinda OK cos is has a thick stem in it but below the stem there is a weak spot ..... right at the focal point of the leverage from the front wheel. EVERY set of 1" threaded forks is on the brink of snapping. Its a fact!

There are ways of helping make a 1" setup OK. Making the stem long enough to fill the whole length of the steer tube worked well (S&M Wedgie Jackson  ::)) but it wasnt very light. 1" clamp on stems meant that you could make the steer tube thicker (cos you didnt have to fit a stem in them) but they were also heavy (and still used the old headset). Just as BMX started improving the strength of 1" forks, the 1 1/8, clamp on stem, threadless headset came along. Trouble free headset, larger diameter steer tube (so stronger) that you could make as thick as you wanted. There was no looking back.

ahead sets way better - while on the subject, did you know that you could actually run 1/8" threadless on a frame that is made for 1" threaded - just slam in the bearings of the aheadset into 1" cups, works a treat.  I ran a skyway for a bit doing this with 1/8" threadless pitchforks :P

i have A 24" GT pro series that takes a 1" threadless head set. i was thinking to get a Quill adapter instead of the old skool Stems, then i could put a new Skool one on it but wil that make any difference? it seems not  :-\

My 1" ripper headtube with 1"1/8th forks fitted. This is quite an easy conversion!  :daumenhoch:
And you get the best of both worlds. Old school frame with new school tech.

Weirdly i tried this last week as i had the some bits on the bench i was giving to my Bro, I did not know if there was a reason you should not do this but he said it would do as it saved him buying a stem  ;D

If you search hard enough, you can find 1" clamp on stems and forks.

Quill adaptors are real flimsy, designed for road/commuter bikes. All it does is allow a clamp on stem but without the benefits of the Ahead system.

menstrual cycles?

There was a kinda changeover period where a few manufacturers made 1" clamp on stuff.

I think (although I could be wrong) that Heavy Tools may have been one of them.

Dragonfly Mosherforks came in 1" ahead, as did Prolite & Haro amongst others.

i think initially it was s&m's bi-product, menstrual cycles, then a few other manufacturers followed suit,

moliterno went with the "1-1/8th  and moeller and the rest of them followed suit,

A little off topic but on the subject of headtubes, do you recall the KHE internal gyro headtubes?

Oh man.
