Erm....Guys.....Don't 100% quote me on this but.....I think they came like this new and the holes were drilled like that to even out the diplacement when pressure is applied pedalling
I have seen 3 sets of these sell like this on the Museum

could go with the displacement theory , some weird hippy road racer would have had an idea about that, done all the calculations for the hole placement etc,etc,etc , then fooked em proper by actually drilling em,
would assume that the guys in Nippon would have thought of that during design? being as this set has been re annod is it possible that there is only one set and it keeps changing hands over in the us , will keep watching as i'm pretty sure i,ve seen em before too ,
whatever the reason is, it just stuck me as funny ,a mate of mine has idea's like this all the time and his stuff makes me chuckle too, usually as he falls off cos his idea just broke
