What Cranks do I need?
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:47 PM »
Hi chaps, I am looking for a bit if advice please. I have a loopy ripper, not sure of year but I am putting tuff 1s on it so it's gonna look like an early bike (weather it is or not). What cranks could I use for this to make it era correct with the Tuff 1s?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't let the BOTM get you down.

There's nowt wrong with feeling like the Jimmy White of the BMX world.  A fantastically talented player, exciting to watch, admired by fans and fellow players alike but he never won feck all either.   ;)

I'd rather be Jimmy than Steve Davis end of.

No wonder you never win BOTM with N/S school cranks on an O/S bike  >:D
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

It really depends on what style the bike is going to be to be honest, with Tuff 1's on you are making a street bike which I would say 1 piece Ashtabula's would be perfect.

However if you went with more of a race bike feel with a set of Araya 7'b or 7'c rims then you should look to a high end alloy crank like Shimano Dura-ace/600's or even better a set of Campagnolo cranks.

It is really good fun (read fooking hard work) building a bike that is 100% era correct.  My DeCoster took 18 months of part sourcing to find every part from the correct era, actually it was not just era correct but 1978 year correct.

Here is my Mongoose DeCoster with Campagnolo cranks on.

Yeah, what about the 1978 air in the tyres? That must have been a right pain to find...

I love that DeCoaster more every time I see it.... Fookin' lush ;-)

Thanks for all your replies guys and whoever said that most Loopys have flights is pretty on the mark so i'm gonna leave the Pre Pinch alone (albeit a lovely set up). I do like the look of those Campagnolos, are they relatively easy to find? cost? also the Maxy Cross are nice too.

You can pick up a set of Campagnolo's from £60 up to £300, but you will have to find a square taper BMX bottom bracket.  Alternatively you could look at an early set of Sakae SR cranks, they are very similar but a lot cheaper.

How about looking at Bullseye cranks or if you want to get really funky Cook Bros or Terry Cable....

Cooks cranks on my Champion.

Terry Cable cranks on my old Pro Class.
