Wheels - how do you build them?
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:31 PM »
Hi all - Im looking for some old school spoked chrome wheels and while I wait, I keep seeing lovely rims and hubs come up for sale.  So, if you buy hubs and rims, how do you get them spoked?  Im guessing this is normally a job for a bike shop?  If so, how much would it typically cost for a pair of BMX wheels?

Also, I get confused with rim sizes.  My Z Rims are 1.5 inches wide.  What is a typical size for freestyle rims?  For example, someone just sold some 1.75 (I presume inches) rims..??

Finally, other than making sure the hubs and rims have the same number of holes, is there anything else to consider when matching them??

thanks,

Paul

ta guys..

The "7X/Proclass wheel rim straightening kit now authorised. Fill ya boots peeps" does not seem to cover wheel building..  Maybe Im missing something??

So, typically £40 plus spokes and nipples.  How much would spokes and nipples typically cost and, would your average workshop stock these??

Its starting to sound a little exensive..

ta,

Paul

when I build wheels for somebody I charge £20 a set + spokes and nipples (usually cost £10-15).

Do it yourself, it really is such a great feeling to know that you did them yourself, also that you save £ and have a new skill to boot.

Its a piece of piss, and to top it off, you can make sure you don't scratch the rims you forked out for.

Yep, I build all my own wheels but my LBS charges a fiver a wheel to do the final tension and true - seeing as i ride all my bikes, I tend to leave it to a professional, but he charges £25 a wheel to build inc spokes & nips, so I save about £15 per wheel to do the building myself and make sure he doesn't scratch the anno :daumenhoch:
Still limping......

I build my own wheels from time to tome. Like others have said it really is satisfying to see them when they are finished.

I find it quite therapeutic lacing and truing wheels when sitting watching the TV :daumenhoch:
