Import duty from The States.....
« on: May 21, 2011, 10:29 PM »
Would anyone know....if one was to purchase a bike from The States for £415.00 ($680.00) ...... what kind of import duty could one expect to have to pay ??? :buck2:

Heard some horror stories on here from folk who had purchased lesser value items :-\ .......so, what would we be talking ???

It all depends on what you say its worth or insure it for.

My Sport frame was insured for $450 dollars and I paid £89.79 when it arrived here.

Import Duty £12.38
Excise Duty £0.00
VAT £69.41
Parcel Force Fee £8.00

If you say its a 'gift' with a value of less that £18 then you will avoid the VAT & duty ( under £135 you pay VAT but not duty )

Also the 'gift' has to be from a person to a person... I had mine delivered to my business address so they decided it wasn't a 'private person'

In these days of 'trackable' parcels I wish I'd had a little more courage and marked the value low... but if it had gone awol I would have been gutted.

Hope that helps  :)

Cheers Ed, it does help indeed 8)

That's the trouble, they have you by the plums........on something of high value, for peace of mind you have to insure it for the correct value (unless you are a risk taker which I am not) - and by doing so you are therefore declaring its value.

Its just so wrong tho......Value Added Tax on a 30 year old 3rd or 4th hand product, I just really can't get my head around that :crazy2:

In regards to charging on 'old' stuff, anything is money to a government and the more they get, the richer they become  :tickedoff:

Anyways, I buy all the time from guys on the museum. I have tried many ways to avoid the dreaded customs/vat/parcel farce charges. If a product is below the value of 40 gbp's, there is (supposedly) no customs charge. If its marked as "gift", there is (supposedly) no vat charge and parcel farce and royal mail both charge £8.00 to deliver to you. I have received parcels without charges and with charges (all valued at £30 and marked as gift as instructed by me to the seller) and all I can say is its down to how customs feel and what postal service is used by the seller  :coolsmiley:

Hope this helps
