How do you sand yours ????
« on: October 18, 2011, 05:44 PM »
Hi.
I am working on restoring some tuffs:

Since this pic, I have cleaned them even more, but now need to smooth out some of the scratches, from sanding. I have been doing it by hand with a fine grade paper, but wondered if any one knows of an easier way??
Is there a drill attachment or small sander that can get around the hubs, that anyone knows of ?? There must be something that people use for polishing stones / jewellrey ect, but I havent come accross anything yet.
Cheers for any help :)

Id use a da with several grades of pads for the flat edges, then use a dremmel type sander for tighter areas

What a DA mate??
I have seen the scotch brite dremel attachments, that seem to come in fine grads and will be at the hardware shope this afternoon, so will let you know what I find.

TBH I was disappointed with the results I got using a dremel, maybe I was too aggressive with it but I found it left marks I could not easily get to.  On another set of Tuff's I have just used wet and dry through the grades, starting at 140 and finishing at 1800 followed by a smooth over with a green scotch brite pad before running over with  WD40.  I found the wet and dry easier to work with and to get into the fiddly corners and it left less noticeable marks on the bits I couldn't reach.

There's a pretty long thread on BMX Museum about restoring Z-Rims and Tuffs by shot blasting them.... good results too.

Hi. Media blasting has been mentioned a few times on other threads, but there is no one near me that does anything finer than grit blasting, which is not a good idea for plastic. I have seen a scotch brite dremel sanding wheel, which should arrive soon and will give that a try. If its to harsh, I will use it for getting the paint off my other tuff and continue this one by hand :(
Ill keep you all posted and should have some results by the end of next week :) :daumenhoch:
