Got an old bike of mine back
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:27 AM »
In mid 2006 I got a new bike (S&M LAF). Things had all got lighter so I got an almost all new setup. A friend of mine was still riding a 1” bike so I gave him my old setup to try and get him riding more. He never ended up building it, and last night he gave it back to me. I thought it was just a frame and forks I’d given him so I was well pleased when he brought it round. All I need is some cranks (I used the same profiles from this bike till a few months ago) and a rear hub (It had an early profile cassette on it).

Oversized Challenger frame (with 990s and thicker dropouts)
Canti mount forks
Peregrine rims, primo front hub
Redneck LT with tabs
Buttler bars
Tech 77 levers
Shimano canti
Oddy Evo Ubrake
Fat S&M seat
Federal seatclamp
BSD chainring
Roughneck grips

I don’t have many old photos of this bike, and even less riding shots but I did get one photo in Dig Magazine on it.

Haha, I dont really do "Minty". Its perfect as it is, just like when I rode it. I wouldnt want to make it look like a soulless "new" bike.
I might chuck some cranks on it, build the rear wheel with something close to a correct hub, but that'll be all.

Im sure i wasnt meant to be collecting Oversized bikes!  :-[

That'd be great, thanks. 48 hole, and the frame has been opened out to 14mm (but i could always use spacer washers). I always ran LHD but it doesnt really matter.

Hopefully Ive got some of the stuff you were after and we can work out a deal  :daumenhoch:

Rebuild update:

I've got the back wheel built so it just needs some cranks it'll be rolling again. With the rear wheel in it looked like its got a really long back end. I measured it and its 15.25"!!! I know its a race bike but thats massive. Having said that, it never seemed a problem when I rode it.

I got the bike all built up now. The rear rim is the matching one for the front but I used to run an early profile cassette with a 36/12 gearing, but I dont have it any more (Big thanks to dannywhac for the rear hub i used). I dont really like the Oddy chainring but i had to use a 44 and this was the latest 44 ring I could find. Nice beat up profile arms and DMR pedals are cool. Its all stuff I have used in the past so its all perfect.

Its kinda nasty really. Super long back end, tiny bars and far from light but its a nice example of a bike I rode in the late 90s, and its totally ready to ROLL!

I really didnt like the Oddy chainring on this so I put something else on. Its a ring I had custom made by a Motorbike place, in about 1996. I sent them a flight ring (with a 19mm hole) and told them to copy that but make it solid and thick. I used it on the Challenger when I rode it (until I changed to a 36t ring) so its ideal for it. Much happier with it now.
