proclass , is the question
« on: April 29, 2011, 06:47 PM »
iv landed myself a 1983 proclass  the brake bridge and the rear drop outs are the right size , the bb is machined so it is one  8) the bloke i got it off had stripped most of the black chrome of it !! dont ask why ........ some people ........... but it was left on under the head tube decal . the forks are stripped also but have the black chrome still on up to the threads on them

here she is

the drop outs are sweet

i removed the head tube decal

the shine

iv only give it a quick polishing and its come up really nice !! with a bit more of an effort it will look stunning !! this is where the problems start  :-\
1, do i polish up and have it chrome ?
2, or do i get it black chromed / powdered ?
i dont know what to do because its just so nice  :-\
what do you all think i should do ?

cheers ric

I'd get it sprayed using a black tinted laquer to match the bits not peeled back, I think that was the og finish anyway just called "black chrome" don't think it actually was "black chrome".

Not sure that makes any sense at all  :LolLolLolLol:

Wasn't the og finish a tinted laquer?  The BMX Action review only refers to it as Black Chrome but that's a chemical process so wouldn't scratch off leaving chrome it would take it back to the nickel layer.  What would be wrong with restoring it to the og finish?  Did  they come in just plain chrome from the factory?

Yes, and that's what I'm saying about an OG finish  ;)

I have a similar thing with my moose - the candy is fooked but the chrome underneath is mint and the moose came in chrome. So next year I'll strip the candy off and have a mint OG chrome finish (OG as in originally chromed by mongoose) which I believe is far better than finishing it in a re-coat.

If the chrome is fooked then yeah re-finish but that looks too nice a chrome finish to me and since the pro-class came in chrome why not leave it ;)

 :daumenhoch:

What year did they start to do them in regular chrome?

Also I remember reading that they used the not so good chromed/nickled frames and put the candy over the top to save on wastage, in other words so that they  didn't have to throw them away.  Do you know if that's true or just an urban myth?

Leave it chrome mate it stunning just the way it is  :daumenhoch:

but if you really want that old black finish back chuck a couple of tubes of peek polish on it and let it rest for an hour or two
then when you remove it you will have a dull black finish again  :LolLolLolLol:

chrome all the way very nice indeed  :smitten:

The pro-class came out in 82 and was offered in both finishes  :daumenhoch:

As for candy over the not so well plated frames, I dunno, I guess it's possible but the that would have been back in the team goose days and it seems a little strange for them to have done that since the team and then pro-class where their top of the line bikes  :-\

The teams were originally candy over nickel 79-80 , then candy over chrome 80-81, then candy over silver powder base from mid 81 onwards and that was a combination of cost saving and durability as the original candy fell off the chrome/nickle just by looking at it !

The black chrome finish looks to be almost like a chemical stain rather than the original thicker candy lacquer of the teams since it kind of fades off thinly rather than flaking of in big chunks  :-\

Either that or it's just very thinnly applied using a lacquer that bonded very well with the chrome  ???
