« on: September 03, 2009, 05:06 PM »
Hi Folks,

seen a couple of version about:

1st version:

one with an alloy brace that follows the cage etc, 3 teeth on the platform on oneside and one tooth on the other..

2nd version:

no brace and 2 teeth on each side of the platform.

which came first, dates, most wanted etc ,

if anyone knows  ???

Thank you.

Here you go mate. Everything you need to know.

Cheers Marc  :daumenhoch:

Suntour XC-I Pedals (1982) Japan. First generation Suntour BMX/MTB pedals which had extremely sharp teeth on cage and support plate on chassis, features that were eliminated in the later model.

Suntour XC-II Pedals (1983) Japan. Revised version of the Suntour "beartrap" style pedal prized by BMX riders. Cage teeth dulled due to feedback from rider injury and plate removed from chassis as decided it didn't effect strength and lightened pedal.

I always thought that it was the other way round, XCI's no brace and shark teeth, XCII's brace and no shark teeth.  Both my OE XCII's have braces and no shark teeth, one set are genuine as supplied OE kit on my Robinson RSR (the bike is 99% original survivor).

I'll have a dig around tomorrow in my mags to see what I can find to verify one way or the other  :daumenhoch:

I always thought the ones with the brace came first..... you could also get these without the very sharp teeth! Then the braceless bodies came out  :daumenhoch:

as if by magic

Suntour XC-1 Pedals 1982

Japan
These first generation Suntour BMX/MTB pedals had extremely sharp teeth, a feature that was eliminated in later models.

i would say that the sharp teeth where replaced with the less sharp ,,,then by 1983 they changed the bodies ,to without the brace

check this website ,,,scroll along to 1982 ,,,some nice pedals on there aswell

Looks like Suntour didn't stick to the ones without the brace for very long, XCI's look to be the shark teeth ones, followed by early XCII's without the brace.  At somepoint Suntour went back to model with the brace for the XCII's and stuck with them...

XCI review in BMX Plus 1983

Later XCII ads..

The ads show the body having a brace which leads me to think the ones without brace were quickly discontinued.  I do remember reading a review of the XCII which said why Suntour had made some changes to the teetch shape and the bodies but I can't find it at the moment  :-\.  If I do find it I'll post it up  :daumenhoch:

Hang on , I'll ask Mr Suntour  :LolLolLolLol: .

What is often the case is that there are no definitive dates/times/places with this old stuff .

The ads MartyC posted are very useful as are the pedal pics , loosely the two products were 82 & 83 . The later ( less sharp teeth ) cages are very popular and the sharp ones are rare .
