« on: May 12, 2006, 12:29 AM »
Hi,

I've seen a TA with a K ... serial number without a date stamp

Is this one of the first ones ? or a fake ?  :police:

I though most of the one's welded recently had '86 as the date code? I'm not sure though.

Bob_Acid knows about the K numbered TA's and if I remember rightly, it's thought that these are original.

Is the frame chrome or white? If it's chrome, it's almost definately not one of the ones welded recently.

All TA's are stamped with USA and the date they were made....... apart from the K# ones. I've got a copy of an early test article from BMXA that states the first production TA's were made in Japan because the teardrop tubing wasn't available in America at the time. These i surmise are the K numbered ones. The only difference is the placing of the flex holes at the drop-outs.

I've tried to make the article big enough to read but it's not happening. It says they turned to japan and found two companys capable of producing them. The Ishiwata Seisakusho Co won it??? remember them :uglystupid2:.

it does state though that they were then shipped to America to be heat treated.

Thx to Mr Coasterbrake for the article

I have an interest in these frames because i own one. I bought it in 91-2.

A few years ago i asked the yanks what the deal was and nobody had any answers. Bart at Skyway was telling me it was a fake till i showed him the photos. Skyway seem to have no idea the k numbered frames exist from what i can make out.

Although i no longer have my 84 US made one to take photographic comparisons with it is identical in every way apart from the curved brake bridge and the flex holes which are not right on the drop-outs as with the US one but about 10 or 15 mill up the shafts. In fact i'd go as far as to say the k one was better quality at the welds but it is chrome and my US 84 was white and i think any decent manufacturer used the better ones for chrome and painted the others. Another differance was the black seat tube sticker that has no mention of tru-temper.

About 6 months after i first asked the question it came up again and Mr coasterbrake on vbmx produced the article. I've since come across 5-6 of them on ebay and such.

Bit of a mystery. They seem to have changed to the straight bridge to cut on costs at some time then changed back because they were crap. I'm not sure if the 86 frames had the straight bridge though?

Anyone that has a TA can they give us the date and what bridge it has and we could probably get some answers.

The geeza at work that sold Jay his Torker Master tells me he has USA TA 00003, i'll ask him to bring it in and see.

So, it looks like

83 TA = Curved brake bridge
84 TA = Straight brake bridge

Is the K numbers 82 then ?
