Mini BMX - recommendations needed
« on: March 29, 2011, 03:47 PM »
hi all

I'm thinking of getting my little lad a mini bmx.  It'll probably still be too big for him at the mo as he's only 3 in May but want to plan ahead :)

What would you recommend?  I've no idea on costs so I'll say £300, what can I get?  I'm of the mind set of getting him one I can then keep as a momento and in 20yrs, who knows...

Btw, what sort of age could I expect him to be able to 'fit' the bike?

Cheers guys
Lou

p.s. If anyone has a decent second hand one in good nick, I could be interested.

Is he riding a balance bike yet Lucy? If not, start him now on one to get his balance. My daughter is 2 and a half and is still little for her age but she struggles along on her little 10" balance bike as she knows she's got a 16" LLil' Ripper waiting for her when she's big enough. I think it will be 18 months at least, so she's got plenty of time to learn. I'm guessing she'll have a 12" wheel bike first anyway as the Ripper is safely tucked away waiting for her.

hiya Spen

Yes he has a balance bike which he loves.  He rides it round the house, now the weather is improving, he'll be able to go down to the park on it again.

Here he is on his 2nd birthday, last May

I must admit, I rather like Rippers and I quite like the Seed but which is better.....FIGHHHTTT  Sorry had to get that one in.  Seriously though, are they on a par with each other?

I got the Lil' Ripper s/h off Paul DB250's lad for just over a ton and it is going to be re-powdered pink with custom decals so it will be totally customised. I will bring it to MK where your little 'un can use it all weekend if you need to be sure - it's currently baby blue so no worries on the camp paint-job if he wants to try it out ;-)

Cool - I'd got my name down for the pit race but was too busy drinking, talking codshit to strangers and fixing some poor bugger's shagged bikes to hear the tannoy and go race (yes I am a muppet!) ;-D

Is it on again this year? I'm gonna spend a little less time doing the above this year and try and do a few more things before the inevitable drinking session starts!

My little lad is now 4 and we picked up a cracking little 16" fit bike from Stodgy and he loves it, proper BMX and well made :smitten: as he was wrecking his 10" and his race bike was not really suitable for the road :daumenhoch:

Here he is at 3 getting rad, but the bike kept falling to bits :2funny:

With his new ride (a little bit big, but he will grow into it)

Give Dave a ring at the shop :4_17_5:

Buy the Pitboss or a micro mini race bike.

I picked up a WTP Seed for my son for a great price from Stodgy, nice bike but it was the same weight as my 20".  He was 5 at the time and hated it, so it's now in the loft. Picked up a 20" mini race bike at the same time and he was off like a bullitt, loved it, and it's 7lb less than the 16" Seed.

The Pitboss is the best off both worlds :daumenhoch:

I must admit, the Pitboss is the type of bike I had in mind for him but I was just worried I couldn't get one like that so light but quite chuffed now.   What sort of size/age is the bike for?  My lad is 3 in May but I'm not concerned if it'll be too big for him for 12 mths.

The weight of it is a big issue for me.  I am also considering the Redline Proline micro/mini too.

Hi Lucy we have a Haro micro mini 18" wheel for our 4 year old also and he loves it as its so light and fast  :LolLolLolLol: but the problem is with the wheels, the tyres are so thin that if he uses it for messing about on and rides up a kerb or something similar BANG goes the inner tubes and they are a nightmare to change so we only let him use it on the track, I think the mini ripper will be too long as we were advised against that along with the pitboss, the problem I found is finding a bike shop that actually stocked the minis to try as most were mail order or sold "look alike" BMX's,  in the end we did a 240 mile road trip to the RADBMX Shop so that he could actually sit on it. Hope this helps.

Jon

That's top advice - get him sat on the bike first, and try them for wieght as I was suprised how heavy the Lil' Ripper actually is :daumenhoch:

Or wait for MK and then you'll be able to try loads of pit bike designs and borrow my Lil' Ripper all weekend anyway :coolsmiley:

I've had a look at a generic 16" bike and I think it's going to be way too big for him for a while yet.  We're off to a bike shop tomorrow to get a feel of the size which is good for him.  Really want to get him a Pitboss but may have to wait 12-18mths and look then.  Don't think hubby is keen on getting him something he can ride straight away especially at that sort of money.

I've seen this one in the flesh, not my favourite but not 'too' bad with price I suppose for an ali frame

I will remove the stabilisers and possibly the pedals first off and see how he goes.  What do you chaps think?  I'm finding it difficult that it's not a bmx  :-[
