My new summer ride.
« on: March 27, 2011, 05:00 PM »
Been after one of these for a while now and finally managed to source one in New York last October. The seller was a pleasure to deal with and went out of his way to make sure there were no 'issues' with the shipping. It was in a pretty shabby state but I knew it'd make a great restoration project for the winter. Luckily the frame & forks were in fantastic condition structurally. The bike came with great parts on it so I didn't have to replace too much, just the seat and stem, brake lever and tyres. Powder coat and decals by "The Usual Suspects." A BIG,BIG thanks to Cheekythirtysix for his time & effort in sourcing much of this build including the re-chroming of the handlebars. I took her out for a spin in town on Friday and she handles great. Feels almost like riding a 26" cruiser. A real head turner too! Hope you guys approve.
The complete bike before being shipped.

Drop outs & seat tube after stripping.

Bars before the re-chrome.

And finally built up.

Parts run-down

'81 Floval Flyer frame with unstamped LG forks
Hutch Cruiser handlebars
Suntour stem nos
Shimano DX crank & pedals
Araya 7x rims
Mitsuboshi Comp 111 tyres nos
Bullseye hubs
Elina saddle dated '81
Pro Neck seat post
Suntour seat clamp nos
Dia Compe MX1000 dated '81
Dia Compe pre-bent lever
Tange MX3 headset
Oakley 2 grips

Nice build. Love a Floval in blue me  :daumenhoch:

Look out for a Tuf/Pro Neck Stem with less rise that the Suntour, possibly an inverted version. It will lower the bars. Flovals have long head tube that push the bars into the skies!

Shameless chance to post pics of mine  :P

The bike did originally come with a gold Pro Neck but the stem top had a crack right through it. I picked the Suntour stem up at MK last summer just in case I needed a 'back up' and it turned out I did. I'm gonna see how it feels with the stem dropped all the way down, tomorrow. An inverted Pro Neck stem would be ideal but they're WAY out of my price range.
I checked out your Floval at MK and for me it was one of the stand out bikes of the weekend. A truly gorgeous colour.  :daumenhoch:

Thanks, glad you liked it.  :coolsmiley:  Thanks for the props

I picked up an inverted Pro Neck 4/5 weeks ago on eBay.co.uk for under £60.00, a few scratches but all good. They're out there and it will help no end  :daumenhoch:

Super cool rider there  , good work with the build  :daumenhoch: .

The rear hub looks a little odd , was it over zealous polishing ? ( flanges are normally higher when they're pressed onto the hub body/centre part of hub ) .
