All is not lost ! you can polish a turd !
« on: February 19, 2011, 01:33 PM »
Bought a bmx and the seller wasn't exactly telling the truth or was a little lets say a bit of a F' wit - when i asked about the bike he came back with that "the rear wheel needs a little work and that the hub was slightly in" and that the brake caliper were" defo dia compe mx 1000" they were copy 1000A's

I didn't know the frame and still don't (although another member now has found one)

so apon stripping the bike all was not lost - the red skyways did have a pushed in rear hub and dead freewheeel, but that has now been delt with and all is cool and will be another thread soon - some of the bits turn out to be good as well - a sugino snowflake 44t chain ring in great condition - a rear chopper tire in great condition that was on the front - a tioga seat that will be re-dyed - some shimano DX 1/2" pedals and they will get the retso work on them in time - and also some bars that turned out to be NITTO bars (which this thread is about )

You can't see the bars well in the shot about and i forgot to take another shot when they were taken off - but they are alloy as far as i know and they had bits of rust and were dull looking - after a good clean and a polish with peek - they have come up (maybe could do with a bit more polishing but we will see)

looking at them there is a question to ask you lot - how is and what is the weld called on the cross bar to bar ? it seems a smooth weld not like the rest of my bars ?

here are the pic's

no knarling !

the weld

the proof

they will go on my Mongoose 82' build

cheers B  ;)

They don't look like alloy Nitto bars to me. I have some here and the welds are definitely different.

The beads on alloy welds are very chunky, look like steel or cro mo to me :daumenhoch:

They might be brazed as opposed to welded ,like old bikes with Lugs used to be made.

If you stripped the top finish back and came back to a yellow/brass finish then that would probably confirm it.

The other option is TIG welding which normally produces a much finer weld bead.

Is there any weight to them?
I've got some Alloy Nitto Bars, light as a feather with chunky beads.

Interesting frame. Tange used a gusset like that on a few models.
I'll see if I can find anything useful ;)

right just stuck a fridge magnet to them and they stick !

they weigh between a standard set and alloy bars !

so if there metal - again how are the welds done ?

so they are metal and defo NITTO bars - so where does that put them ?  just for asking what sort of price are they worth ?

23" wide

cheers B  ;)

If the magnet sticks then they are steel, no idea on value.

Can't say for sure about the welds I think they are mig but they could be braze.
