Pushed in ! need a clever idea to help !
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:20 PM »
Right got a pair of red alloy hubbed skyways

trouble is some muppet has at some point has over tightened the rear hub, pushing it in and fooking it up

now none of the rivit are damaged just the hub each side

so now what i would like to know from you lot is, has any one got one back in shape and been sucsessfull in it working ?

do you think that if i lay it on a flat suface and gently hit it in the right place to bring it back to the right place and shape ?

or does any one have any other ideas that they can come up with that might work ?

cheers B  ;)

get thinking  :knuppel2:

no mate sorry - but I usually check most threads anyway (I can either learn something or they might go off topic with hilarious consequences)

Never owned an OS pair of Skyways so can I be excused too... pictures might help though.

...anyway isn't a clever a big knife  :)

I've had this problem before BE ,, and tbh it's a fookin nightmare and fiddly

I ended up trying to warm up the hub and gently tapping from the opposite side , only thing is you struggle to keep the face even as you attempt to knock back each alloy hub prong.
someone devised a tool , where it is a long bolt  was fed through where the axle goes and you slid on a wide tab then attached with a nut from the inside of both hub flanges . Then slid a collar surrounding the outer of the flange, then slid another metal plate wider than the collar on top, and then a nut to tighten and therefore pull the hub face upwards and out evenly and slowlly as not to cause any damage

Anyway why do you want to use a clever ?  ???

  :D  :LolLolLolLol:

I had this prob bitd, not from over tightening by a muppet, but from the cones binding and winding themselves up, quite common.

I put a new, coaster hub in mine. There is a way of drawing them back into shape, but I don't know it, but I have seen a thread with it on.

I'd be tempted to drive over it, seems the most sensible thing to do!! :2funny:

Right then.

Mark at RetrospectBMX (cbrgill) has a tool that can do this with limited success. My brother Simon (Hootski70 on here) and I looked at using crank and pulley pullers with limited success too.

In the end the really bad ones we had to cut the rivets, turn the hubs inside out and re-bolt them temporarily and pass a big threaded bar through and wind them straight then turn them back round. Not what you want to do, but if they're really bad it's the only way ;-(

Pm me and I'll get Mark's number to you.

Get a small G clamp ... put it against the face of the wheel using something to stop any scratches on the nylon, feed the other end through the wheel and put a long thin socket or something similar that wont bend through the wheel and on to the back of each "arm" section of your metal hub, put the other end against the G cllamp ,it will be at a slight angle so go slowly and do a bit at a time on each hub section until they are all level, turn over and repeat, you can also use another G clamp to span the rivets so as not to push them out , again do 1 section at a time ...   The G clamps that have a turn type arm are better than the newer trigger type as you can wind back and forth and you have more control ,rather than just tighter and tighter until you push the release mechanism ,
