well basically, why was there a mongoose expert, cali and supergoose, was the expert just a lower spec version of these, just wondering really, thats the reason i highlighted the 'experts' as a bit of a pun

Right then the old expert/cali thing again  :LolLolLolLol:

OK first off the full size 20" range for 1983 (your frame that you posted up in an earlier thread is an 83) went like this (top to bottom)

Pro-Class
Supergoose
Californian
Expert

The pro-class was special thin-wall full chr-mo tubes throughout, forks included. The rear triangle tubes are a thicker dimension than the cali/expert.
The supergoose was all tubes chr-mo with the thicker rear triangle tubes also (but not thin wall chr-mo) and it had chr-mo forks too.
The cali and expert (in 83) both had main tube chr-mo and rear triangle tubes steel these frames are often refered to as trimoly. The forks were steel too. The tubes on the rear triangle were thinner outer dimension than the pro-class and supergoose.

Many people with a 1983 trimoly mongoose frame ask is it a cali or an expert and it is difficult to give an answer - the main difference between the 2 for 1983 was the parts on the full assembled bike. The cali was designed to be a little more lightweight and slightly more "casual track use friendly" so it had alloy pro-class wheels, and quick change spider with alloy chainring whereas the expert had pro-steel wheels and a steel chainwheel.

There is however a slight difference in the 2 frames when you study the official mongoose pics of the era.

The rear tubes on the expert meet the seat tube higher up and some use this as an identifier for an early expert .

However, when you factor into that the fact that the expert wasn't sold as a model in the UK and the fact that in the UK 83 catalogue the californian shown bares more resemblance to the frame style of the expert in the US catalogue and add further into the mix the "sticker them up and get them sold" mass production at the time and it's a mess !

The basic rule of thumb if you are doing a stock build would be to pick the stickers to match the build components you will use - after that I guess it's take your pick.

It's a little bit easier for other years as the expert was trimoly with the californian turning full chr-mo (some full chr-mo frames have been found with survivor expert decals on though and at least one test article has the expert as full chr-mo although all other literature goes to the contrary - you gotta love mongoose !  :D )

So there you have it - clear as mud  :daumenhoch:

Certainly from a marketing point of view the expert was always the lower spec compared to the californian (later on came the M1 which was even more budget minded with an all tubes steel construction but lets not go there now  :D )

 ;)

cheers dude, so basically I could put cali stickers on? I think I'll go for the expert decals but was just wondering :L
But thanks for the info, made a good read, I've got a bit of an update on the mongoose anyway so will post some pics up soon?
Would it be normal to put pro-class bars on this?
Cheers for the info, Lucas. :)
