I was wondering what coasters there were in the 80's I remember bendix but what other hubs were out there as I am toying with putting on in a set of Arayas 7 xs.  :daumenhoch:

My mate's got a Suntour (same as in early Skyways only for spokes) 36 hole NOS Coaster circa '84 he wants to get rid of.

Think he wants 'bout £80.

I bought a Shimano one off ebay a while back similar to this one.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHIMANO-COASTER-BRAKE-HUB-36-HOLE-NOS-/350427410321?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item519719ef91

I fitted it to a new bike I got to ride around on and it seems OK.  Not sure if they were about in the 80's tha same as this if you wanted an era correct one.

GT and ACS both made coaster/freecoaster hubs in the 80's, from about 84/85 onwards  ;)

BITD nearly all of the Nottm bmx'ers rode coaster.

I tried a shimano but it was not very good for rollbacks, the Suntour and bendix Coasters (both OE fitment on skyways) were much better for kickturns and rollbacks.

Best thing to do is try and get hold of a manky old skyway with a coaster and try it out before spending your hard earned on spoking one up.

Make sure you get the wheel bolts with it tho 'cause they're a proper awkward thread size.

They probably get a bit better once worn in a bit.  Took me quite a while to get used to my original one. I was one of the first in the area to get one and people were always asking for a go. Quite funny watching all the local experts struggling to even ride noramally.

Coasters were really something quite different in the UK. In fact the only one I had used was the one fitted to the girl next doors shopper bike, she used to live in Belguim.

I've got a set of Z's which I'm going to be restoring for my build.....

The rear is laced into a Bendix Coaster and would probably clean up ok....

Are the normal laced hub ones hard to find?

I was one of those Nottm coaster users :-)
My 84 Master has a cruiser and I still prefer riding that to my new school bikes.
If I could get a coaster to fit my 2006 Sport I'd do it straight away

Coasters can be ridden and ridden well ( But not by me ).

Here's some pics of me old mate 'd.p' from Nottm.

d.p came out of coaster retirement in 2009 to shred the broadmarsh banks (the Humps) for one last summer before they were flattened after nearly 30 years.

After a couple of days practise he ripped like this:
