Wheel spokes- HELP!
« on: December 06, 2010, 05:57 PM »
I'm going to atempt to respoke some Z rims with some ACS low flange hubs. I've never done this before, can you guys help?
Uncertain which size spokes/nips to buy. I'm just after some normal spokes, can you help and maybe cut and paste a link for some on Ebay that are at the right price.
I don't want to get the wrong ones.
Thanks

Nice one, thanks for that.
Just out of interest does anyone know how much it'll cost me to get these done at a bike shop, including spokes?

I wouldn't immediately go for 194mm spokes.  It mainly depends on what lacing pattern you are going for 3x or 4x.

I generally get my spokes from custom riders, they have a good range, never been out of stock on anything i've wanted and sell individually, so you only buy what you need.

They are really helpful too, and usually arrive within 2 days.

very true as most my wheels are laced 3 cross wqhich would be i believe 188mm spokes or 186 with long nipples

I think I use 184mm for a 3x lacing on Z-Rims as the rims have a raised section in the middle where the spokes sit.

ive just done a set with acs large flange hubs and used 184 spokes with a 3x pattern so i wouldnt use these, the other 2 sets ive had done had low flange hubs and 194 spokes with a 3x pattern id be tempted to go with these as they work :D

So Gaz 184 3 cross works well then ( slightly long at the rim tape side or not )

I'm sure when my Z's were done for my Quadangle (4 years ago mind ) they were a bit long and thought maybe 182's next time

I could be wrong , as this was before going to Craig garage for a lobotomy  :D

Thanks Gaz

I might just boil some up , all twisty like ,delve my hand into a box of random spokes 181,184, 182, 186's

and drop them off at Fox's cycles

and ask for the hub decals to be lined up facing Mecca

and the valve holes line up exactly 2 degrees west of magnectic north    :D

Michael Hutchins time :)

Take the wheels down into the shop dungeon to build  ::)

and then get the following

One of these

and one of these

and some of this

and jack off with a few mouthfuls of these

and it'll be just like being in Sydney hotel room 1997

Then open your eyes ,, the wheels won't be done , and all the customers will have probably left the shop.

But mentally you be in a better place  :D  ;D

i built up those black rims you sold me gaz, 3x on small flange suzue hubs, i used 194 mm on the front but for some reason on the rear they were too long, so ended up using 188mm which worked fine :D
hope this helps :daumenhoch:
