1980 moosegoose [Finished survivor stylee for now]
« on: November 25, 2010, 03:49 PM »

OK so you may or may not have seen the moosegoose for sale on here a few months ago ? The lady selling it was trying to fund a new school ride for her son - well we talked it out and came to an agreement so everyone was happy and it was added to my collection  :)

Now it's a bit of a marmite frame as far as peoples opinions - some love it and many hate it !  :D

For those unfamiliar with the moose it was designed as a hybrid style 20" wheeled frame - it served 2 purposes - it was initially designed (With the help of then mongoose rider Danny Oakley who was 6ft+ ) as a race frame for taller riders. It was also sort of an adult cruiser that parents could knock around on with their BMX enthused kids.

It's full chr-mo frame and forks and is kind of a tall supergoose/team. It has 1 1/8" top and down tubes as oppose to the 1" tubes of the other 20" frames from mongoose at the time and has a reinforced thicker walled head tube due to the extra length.

Here's some back in the day shots of the moose in action (1st and last pics are Danny Oakley who helped design it)

They were only available for around 18 months or so - throughout 1980 and part of 81.

They weren't sold in high numbers in the UK but they were available over here.

Here is a pic from an article in BMX weekly :

So on to my bike.

The original candy red finish is falling off and is in a bad way - it already has large chunks missing  - eventually at some point I will strip it off as beneath it is a mint original chrome frame  :coolsmiley:

I'll build it with a totally different spec when it's down to it's chrome but for now in it's battered candy finish I decided it would be cool to do a survivor style build with it.

I kept the frame, forks and bars from how I bought it and changed everything else.

I used parts that I had which although not totally factory spec are in the same vein as to give it a factory spec "look" and feel.

Parts spec:

1980 moosegoose frame and forks (original candy over chrome & original decals)
mongoose 1st Gen SS bars
mongoose gold stem (original finish & decal)
mongoose team grips (original not repop)
mongoose seat clamp
mongoose BB
mongoose 175mm chr-mo crank
gold spider / 40T ring
weinmann 7c style rims
shimano high flange hubs
cheng shin snakebellies fat/thin combo
suede race saddle
dia-compe 1020 with dia-compe pre-bent lever
MKS BM5 rat traps
genuine original mongoose vinyl padset

So there you have it - let the debate and insults begin...............

Nice addition to your collection.  :daumenhoch:

But not my cup of tea really. Always thought they looked far too odd proportionally.

The candy red doesnt look that bad from the pix.  :D

Back in the day I would have absolutely hated it. If you had ridden a moosegoose through my mid-80's playground you'd have been torn to ribbons.

However, as a bored thirtysomething I embrace it's weirdness and I love the way it doesn't make sense. I'd honestly love one.

And it looks as though it would wheelie forever...

looking sweet - would love to see it pictured out on some dirt track some where

it's kinda strange to see the geometry and see it stretched like that

top job there - is it tempting to strip it to chrome ?

cheers B  ;)

Excellent build, I remember seeing one of those new back in the day and quite fancied it just for the quirkyness. You've really captured the early 80s flavour with those components. (nice detail pics BTW  :daumenhoch: )

Frameset looks to be in fine condition - how's it ride?

Totally bonkers John  :crazy2:  It's a must have bike for any serious goose collector though . I was so glad it came to you when that women put it up for sale on here ........ and you got it at a good price too  ;)

Got to say it looks so much better now you have changed the wheels from the Z's it had on and the other tweeks you have made  :daumenhoch:

I've had the pleasure to ride it .  :daumenhoch:

So have I   :D     I don't think your neighbours were too happy though Carl when we took it for a midnight spin around your estate  ;D  It actually rides very well !

The dilema you have John is that as we both know the chrome underneath the laquer is absoluteley mint  8) but like others have said it is only original once  :-\  Personally because I have seen the condition of the laquer and the chrome underneath I would strip it .... it will build into one seriously mint moose  8)
WANTED : Old school BMX patches/sew on badges ......  please  :)
