Removing Paint from Chrome
« on: April 26, 2006, 03:47 PM »
Hello chaps

Whats the best way to strip paint from chrome? I need to refurb some part painted bars.

I presume Nitomors, but will it damage the chrome? Any tips?

Cheers
Dave

Nitromors will do the job nicely m8...it wont damage the chrome. wear a mask cos the fumes are pretty harsh. paint on an ample amount... wait 5 minutes or so until the paint bubbles and stops reacting....then work in some fresh nitromors with the end of the brush... leave again for 5 or so minutes until the reaction stops and then wipe away with old rags. If you are doing a whole frame then do it one tube at a time :daumenhoch:
I recommend you use gloves too as that nitromors loves to burn ya skin :D

you can use any paint stripper but this will damage the laquer covering the chrome, depending on the paint this could have damaged it anyway, if your not too far from me i'll laquer it for you after you strip & polish the thing

So, is Nitromors a paint stripper? If so, will it kill the laquer?

Thanks for the offer to 'strip & polish me thing' - nice one!  :daumenhoch:  ;D  (seriously, thanks dude, I'm down south though)

Cheers
Dave

it does damage the laquer but if your not using it as a rider & you keep it in a nice dry place it will be ok

Cool. Thanks Weston...it'll be in the bedroom with all the other bikes, so should keep dry. Thank you for the advice - much appreciated.

Dordy - ah, I remember that one now...very nice.

Once you've polished the chrome back up, just re-laquer it  :daumenhoch:

Only ever seen a couple of chrome frames that were laquered. My hutch was probably the chromiest of chromey chrome frames and it wasn't laquered... just triple chrome plated :D  My My............. how i polished ;D

Dunno what all this laquer bollocks is, some bikes had a thin coloured clear coat like the Super tuff Burner, HL turbine and such like.

Strip the paint off with the inspector, give it a once over with chrome poland and the jobs a minter.

Dont worry about rust, as unless the chrome is damaged it wont rot.

Just every now and again give it a clean, and thats that.

I was thinking that ? , I never had any bikes bitd that had the chrome lacquered ? (surely after a while of cleaning/polishing it will wear away ? ) .

As Oli said regularly clean it , only damaged chrome will go rusty quick ie. some forks I stripped matte black paint off were chrome below but were "keyed" to accept the paint , these may need a re-chrome or lacquer to stay reasonable .
