Author Topic: skyways arrived today, struggling to get them on the forks though (Read 4149 times)

evening all

my new skyways arrived today

got them straight out the box and went to try them on the frame, but found a slight problem
they fit in the rear dropouts no probs, but the forks are another matter - while they are defo the right size the fork dropouts are thinner near the end and wider where the axle should sit. they don't want to go on with mild force but i haven't tried whacking them in or filing anything down

I did wonder if it's the powder coat, but don't want to really force them on and risk messing up the finish, although might not have a choice
is this normal with haro forks? I think the previous owner ( harorider ) had new school tuffs on there before and can't see any damage...

thought i'd better ask before I go and mess up SBDs fine workmanship

has'nt the wheel axles got the flat spots on them ?.
if not its either change em out for the right sort.or get the file out and take a little bit out ya forks

Old school forks are designed to have flat axles, just file them a little bit where they go in the dropouts.

As said twice you will need to file them down. You might want to cut them down aswell as they are normally long. Leave the nuts on if you cut them down as they will clean the threads up when you take the nuts off.

HANG ON BEFORE YOU FILE ANYTHING
are these the new school graphites you were on about, if so just take the allen head axle bolts out, put the wheel in place in the forks and then put the allen head axle bolts in with the correct washers that should have come with them

no flat spots on the axles - they're just threaded all the way along, thought I'd be ok with 10mm axles

are there different axles available for NS tuffs as well as this type?

as brettypeeps said they're also a bit on the long side!

my toolkit's not really up to the job, plus tbh I'm a bit nervous about fooking up a brand new wheel
dave if you fancy giving me a hand sometime I'd be very grateful

no mate they're regular black tuffs - the guy selling graphites relisted em for 175 quid!
the axles don't have allen heads in them, just a bolt and washer - need to get some more washers too to space em out a bit methinks

don't worry I'm not going to file anything! (no file for a start

just seen this,i did have new school tuffs on and axles went in ok although i did have to pull forks apart slightly to allow for washers but thinking about it was there a thing about the new school tuffs having 2 different types of axles fitted $:-\$

The 2010 wheels have new axles fitted in them because the guy that ordered them for the UK (Distributer) insisted they come with ridiculous axles. I had a chat with skyway earlier this year about it and they told me all about it. it is either a new axle or file and cut unfortunately

If I line up the wheel to the forks it looks like it needs some spacers in there (I thought the washer and nut should go on the outside so the nut doesn't grind off the paint when I tighten it)

they do but some people also put thin washers on the inside too to prevent chewed up drop outs hence why the haro ones were pretty good

there's plenty of room inside - someone must have pulled em apart

On my master I have washers on both inside and outside of the frame and forks. 8x washers on total . I got some if Hutchman cant help you out

Took mine to a local engineer cut all 4 axels shorter and filed the front-job done £5

I doubt it Rob, W4nstanleys stock system works in reverse; they have stock when the computer says No and no stock when the computer says Yes
