Hoffman Sugar Baby
« on: November 09, 2010, 10:05 PM »
Brought this Hoffman off Ebay not really knowing what it was.

Feedback from you lovely people said it was a 96/97 Sugar Baby... and pretty decent.

Very similar one on the museum

http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/hoffman/41583

So I decided this should be my new rider and got down to stripping and cleaning it.

Its been pretty well kept but rather rusty in places - the frame has a few scrapes but nothing to write home about - it cleaned and polished up lovely.

The only pi$$er was that the previous owner had chopped the bars stupidly short - they are getting sent to Sawzall for extensions  :daumenhoch:

Just need a layback seatpost ( going for a Odesssy one ) a front brake ( DC Bulldog ) and a seat ( not sure I like the Hoffman ones  :( )

looking well Nice Edwardo!   :coolsmiley:

i've got a nice silver bulldog front brake if you want it?  ???

also i'd stay well clear of the Oddy laybacks, they're made of butter and bend way to easy!

oh, with regards the front brake. i've got a nice mid school DNA ADD brake plate if you wanted to put that on it??   :daumenhoch:

Update - bars being extended & sorted by Sir Phil of Sawzall :daumenhoch:

Had the oven pride on the pegs and got them back to alloy

Kept the original seat and cleaned it up to go on an alloy painted layback - repainted the DC back brake the same colour to...

Got black, pink and baby blue ame rounds but not sure what to go with yet - seat is black so...

Got shot of the GT stem and cleaned up the original stem... much better.

Anyway - more pics soon as I get my bars back  :daumenhoch:

Just need a copy of HB decals for the seat tube... gonna ask Del.

sorry dude - lost track that you suggested the tyre change - duh... its weird as I really liked the tyres then after you said and I had a scout around for Robs suggestion, they started looking 'small'... gotta get some ordered.

looks super sweet that Ed!!  love those!

with regards the rear AD brake snapping back?  you need to load the spring tensions on each side (not too much though) slacken off the allen key nut, then with a spanner turn the spring cap so it pulls the caliper off the rim, then tighten the allen key while holding the spring tension.  do both sides and bobs your uncle  :daumenhoch:

Rob - I tried that and they are pretty springy but when you put the cables on they loose all the snap... I'll keep fiddling.

( Gary - you got a PM on those tyres  :daumenhoch: )

it was the bar extensions that perplexed me the most, they certainly look neat and would be fine for a show bike but i personally wouldnt advise riding with them,
if they are indeed solid then putting that much weight so far out on the bars would feel very weird to ride to me,
plus the fact that the insert is so close to the major stress area, fatigue over time could well end up in catasrophic failure and a sharp handlebar end to the face/throat/chest.
just buy some uncut bars, hoffman love handles, patriots, chocolates, castillo's, moes bars, would all work :daumenhoch:

the odyssey tyres are fine, they just look so thin on a chunky mid school ride, aesthetic taste i guess,

without sounding a twat, have you got the springs on their respective correct sides?
they are right and left specific,

do the arms bind on the posts at all?
try fitting the brake without the springs to check that the tensioner washer and bolt are working freely,

sweet bike.....
sugar baby........erm...........ok :-\
