Araya Aero & GT Coaster Hub Resto
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:50 PM »
I've had these wheels since new BITD, and they are in need of a bit of TLC.

They started life as silver anno araya aeros, a chrome GT coaster hub rear and suzue small flange front. After years in the garage, they look like this.....

Rims scuffed (and looking pretty rough on the braking surface)

Coaster hub showing signs of age

No sign of a shine anywhere

I've scanned the posts in tech  & resto to get all of the tips I can, and here are the results.....

First a bit of a polish up for the coaster hub, and a newer hub that I picked up at a very reasonable price at MK10

Then some oven pride treatment for the rims, and then some polishing.

Lace 'em up with some new SS spokes and give them a bit of a true up

Some new araya stickers care of Del and the finished wheels

They look mint.   :daumenhoch:

If the bike had chrome bars and chainring, the Arayas would look perfect but the black Skyways work better because of the black bars, chainwheel and pedals. (IMO)   :)

Thanks for all the great comments ! (even though the arayas & GT hubs have some bling factor, I thought most would go for the Skyways !)

I remember the coaster hubs being serious money BITD, but can't remember how much. What would one be worth now ? any ideas ?
