84 Skyway TA Build - Alloy or plastic hubs?
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:20 PM »
Embarking on my first build. Always wanted a TA when I was a young lad and now I've got the F&F. Looking for a set of Tuff II's and trying to keep it fairly date correct.  Did plastic hubs fronts and alloy rears get released as a set in 84? I know alloys were out in 84 and plastics in 85. Trawled the web but can't find the answer. Anyone know?

You can go with either, they will both look good, they did plastic fronts & coaster rears.

There's a black alloy rear/plastic front on ebay from 1984. That's what's has confused me. I didn't think a set like that existed.

Could always get a new set and put some Kool Kaps on...

As a rough guide this is when each model first appeared............

Tuff I (Unstamped) 1974
Tuff I (Stamped) 1977
Tuff II (Steel Hubs) 1979
Tuff II (Alloy Hubs) 1982
Tuff II (Rear Alloy Hub Front Plastic Looseball Hub) 1985

So for an 84 build if you want to be era correct I'd say alloy front and rear hubs - but with the alloy rear / plastic fronts coming only a year later you may want to save a few pennies and go that route  :daumenhoch:

mongoositis - an expensive disease......

A lovely white one. Planning on black tuffs with blue and chrome brakes, bars etc.
