Shimano DX cranksets

Am I right in saying there were two different generation of the DX crankset, the main difference being the pedal attachment ends of the crankarms?

yes, sort of, they started in 1978 with the 600, but they looked completely differant, this website shows the 1981 version with the extendable lenth part but no others without it, funny thing is never remember the extendable lenth part, but this may be that i never looked closely enough to a crankset....

Sam, I was refering to where the pedal screws in. I'm sure I've seen two styles, here's the first which I've hunted down. Notice the nut to the rear of the length adjuster, allen adjustment, etc, which I understand are the 1st gen



...on the 2nd this was replaced with a tooth type fitment (which mine are).

i didn't realise they were 2 types, the previous ones i have seen were like mine with writing on the outside chrome part of the pedal extender bit

I hadn't until I was looking for the instruction manual. Apparently the design was changed because the adapter pin had a tendency to snap off.

see what you mean, both of mine are like that instruction manual...  never knew there was another design.
