Anyone used a 26" BMX (or SS) for commuting in Autumn/Winter?
« on: September 20, 2010, 12:49 PM »
I am thinking about getting some sort of single-speed bike, possibly BMX, for riding to work and back fairly regularly (about 4 days out of 5), through very bad weather.
Does anyone have experience of this, and in particular fitting mudguards/lights etc.  ???

I'm guessing that if the bike doesn't have the correct clearances and bosses that I could fit mountain bike mudguards?

Through the summer I've really enjoyed riding my Felt 24" BMX to work but I can't get enough seatpost out to ride sat down properly (even with XL seatpost) and I don't want to fit lights and mudguards to it as it will get occasional track use, even if just for training. I have fun when riding home (jumping a few kerbs/speed bumps etc) which might point me more towards a big BMX [plus narrow chains, soft aluminium cranks etc don't last long with me  :-[ ].

Not bad... but I've gone for an OM Flyer. I'm looking forward to banishing deraileurs and other such nonsense from my life  :)

i used to ride this old dmr  trailstar to work all the time.

got fed up with gears , sus forks etc so stripped it down and sprayed it up and made it more like a large bmx, single speed etc, rigid forks.  profile cranks, wtp stem macneil pivotal post and seat, graveyard chainring, seventies plastic pedals, king headset.....

much better ride now and more fun. my mate who sold it to me a few years back loved what i did to it.
